Re: Catfish tactics for Cobbleacre

good luck dan, sure you are going to get one, dont always think like a carper though with the hair rigs
, sea anglers never do and still catch!!

Re: Catfish tactics for Cobbleacre

Well, most cats that are stocked with carp are caught by the carpers with carp rigs/bait etc..

Red face Re: Catfish tactics for Cobbleacre

Made my rigs up for them, got some bait.

Really wanting to catch 1 now, and even if I say so myself have been working hard to prepare for them, so hopefully it will all pay off.

If not, I have a feeling it won't be my last trip out for them

Bait I have so far is 21mm halibut boilies, which are supposed to work well there. 2 of them on a hair.

Other bait I'll probaly get will be squid and maybe liver.

Got my plans for Mario's too. Arrive roughly 4.30pm Friday afternoon. Have 2 rods out "for carp" up until 9pm. Switch 1 rod to 2 halibut pellets, the other rod to squid/liver until morning. Fish 1 rod "for carp", 1 rod "for cats"

Re: Catfish tactics for Cobbleacre

i too used to fish the top lake for the perch and was happy with the results
but i did want to have a go at the catfish in the bottom lake and found them not to hard to catch from ther venue
my best tactics there was to fish for the cats well off the bottom and the one above which was my biggest from that venue 27lb 12oz was caught fishing a bait 5ft off the bottom how ever i have had them to over 40lb using this tactic aswell so it does work
as i said best tactics there was to fish the zig rig which i used to fish on a running lead system so at any time i could change the depth by paying out line .
now i,m not sure if now you have to join the syndicate but you will have to look into that if you really want a good chance of a cat fish swangey far better chances and the rules are not so silly too .
best of luck

Re: Catfish tactics for Cobbleacre

Looks good to me too. I wouldn't bother w/the hair rig, cat are too hungry/dumb to get fancy.
Looking at your drawing, I would put the bead/stop below the egg(sinker). Cat are lazy scavengers if a cat feels any resistance from a weight it may drop it and run. I call that a "Carolina rig". Lobworms would be spot on, or try the blood. Get a couple gallons of blood, (pork or beef is common here) pour it into a shallow tray and put it in the sun for a day (or two if you can) chunk it up w/a knife into a container w/lid.
Cast carefully w/a swinging lob cast, or some guys wrap it in mesh or nylon stocking, pinning it w/the hook.
Good luck, we're waiting to hear the results.
ps. As far liver its a gr8 choice, try chicken livers inpaled on the hook (esp. a trebble hook)
chicken liver, carolina rigged=#1 bait and style here....imo
