Re: going for my first cat? tackle? dont get conned into buying bigger rods than you need 2.5 test with good line and a good reel should be fine.i have caught cats to low twenties when fishing for carp anf i have witnessed cats to 40 plus coming out on ordinary carp tackle. the important thing to remember is a strong leader 40/50 lb because the cats can wear down ordinary line.

Re: going for my first cat? tackle? they are a lot easier to net then a carp or a pike,i prefer not to net them,i use a glove and grab their bottom jaw and pull them out,or drag onto an unhooking mat if you are fortunate to get a big one, best of luck al

Re: going for my first cat? tackle? Were you fishing Stateside I'd tell you to get a 7-foot saltwater rod and 25-pound-test line. Big hooks with worms, fish or pieces of fish, soap, dough baits, shrimp, clams, and especially chicken liver will produce more often than not. Catfish feed by taste/smell and not by sight, so make sure that whatever you use has a strong scent. __________________ 2012 species: 13 All-time species: 65 New species caught in 2012: white sucker, popeye shiner, white shiner
