Re: catfishing

welcome to the forum bob!

I've fished for most freshwater species, but not cats. I know a lot about tactics and feeding habits etc now for them and I'm definitly giving it a go next year sometime. I've found a decent lake that holds some specimens to 40lb that average around 20 and are pulled out quite often.

You get lots of different species of cats in usa don't you? Probaly grow a lot bigger too..

Re: catfishing

welcome to the forum bob, cat fish are only just starting to become popular over here ,they are not a native species but because of their fighting qualities and the size they can grow to they are being stocked in more and more waters,
not even sure if our catfish is the same as yours, ours is the wels catfish and we have had specimins up to about 70lb caught, are these the same as yours?.

Re: catfishing

Hi m8. Do mine at Wintons. Have managed one at 56lb. They lost the best back in 01 but the weights are coming back up now. Brilliant. Once you've had a cat you won't want to know carp. Different fishing altogether. Wish you luck.

Re: catfishing

I've targetting catfish and bullhead quite often over the years. Never really got anything major as far as a really big one, just a bunch of 1-2 pound channel cats and such. I don't catch them much smaller or much bigger then that, but I have had a couple here and a couple there that snapped my line. I usually use 8-10 pound test line, but I'm starting to wise up and use bigger line.

Re: catfishing

I live on the Mississippi River and we loooooove catfishin here! The largest cat I ever caught on a pole was a 10lb blue on 8lb test... She was preggo though, too... We pull channel cat outta the river on poles that average about 1-2 lbs... We get much bigger on bank poles and trot lines though. Last August our Sportsmans Club had our annual fishing rodeo and we pulled out over 120lbs between 13 cabins. I guarantee I'll have some brilliant pictures on here later this spring and into summer...

Re: catfishing

Bre5584, 1-2 pound channel cats are my norm, but I am hoping to get some bigger then that this year. Hell, I'm in a drought right now. I went all last year without catching a catfish, only caught one bullhead about 5-6 inches long. So hopefully I can find my thunder and fight with some channels and flatheads at my fishing holes.

Re: catfishing

rockinmichigan- We caught quite a few catfish last summer... Pulled my first of the year out on May15th... We were out on the river... It was a bit chilly that day, but back in the sloughs it was prob about 55-60 degrees. My friend and I had our bikinis on and the two guys we were with had their shirts off. We stopped by another friends cabin later that day and they were all out in Carhartts and jeans and coats... I think everyone thought we were crazy... We were just impatient for the river season to start- thought we'd hurry it along a little...

As my dad is the executive director of county conservation, I get access to ponds that are normally off-limits to the public... We catch quite a few cats outta one pond in particular, although I lost the big one last year... I got a little too excited and wasn't thinking right... Snapped my line. Bonehead mistake... I was irate.

I'll be looking forward to hearing about how your luck with the cats goes!

Bre
