centerpin set ups

hi can any body advise me on the best set up for fishing the margins on the center pin . ive had loads of big doubles off the top simply by freelining a bait by casting it over a small branch from an overhanging tree, lifting it clear of the water, then lowering onto the water wen mr carp comes along on.on accasions having to wait buried in the undergrowth for an hr or two but it can be rewarding. i would like to try a stalking rod ive made, a cut down joby from a ss5 north western blank and an old merlin centerpin, id like to try bottom fishing close in i mean at your feet any tips on set ups would be great

If you're really fishing that close in with no need to cast I'd be tempted to just freeline a worm and wait for the line to move on the surface, you could add a small stick or quill float for a more visible indicator. If the water has a bit of depth a simple float ledger using a tiny bomb or perhaps the classic lift float method would be in keeping with your overall set up . both have worked well for me.
Good luck , Playing a good fish on a centerpin has to be the most enjoyable way.

Try fishing a few inches, but not more than 5 or 6 inches over depth with a small float double rubbered, so it lies flat, then watch it sail of when a nice big fat carp takes the bait, ot just watch the line creep off.

Re: centerpin set ups

Or you can try surface fishing for Carp with an inflated Lobworm. The lob just hangs with its tail wriggling enticingly below the surface and is usually a killer when stalking large fish on the surface.
Or you can try close in using a small leger (a couple of SSG shot on a short link) and use the inflated worm just above the bottom; which is especially good on silty bottoms when it prevents the lob from completely burying into the silt.

NB. If the angler doesn't like using a hyperdermic Needle to inflate a lob then they can also make their Lobs bouyant using a piece of red foam.

Re: centerpin set ups

my favourite way of fishing close in for carp with a pin is,, put your float on a rubber so you alter the depth quick, use a ring swivel aprox 2 to four inches from the hook, put just enough heavy metal on the swivel (not the ring) to sink the float, fish over depth, always point the rod at the float and always put the rod in the rests, strike at any movement of the float, up or down, try rolled smoked bacon on a size 10, or marmite paste seems to work well close in, rgds ANT.
