Re: The Carp!

Interesting point about the different carp families there. What family are F1's part of then? They are becoming common place on many stillwaters and commercials nowadays.

Are these some kind of natural carp hybrid or are they bred purposely for the match angler/commercial scene?

Re: The Carp!

Hi northern eye, the F1 is a specially breed strain of fish, (notice I say strain of fish and not carp, because they are not true carp!) they are a cross between the 'Common Carp' and a 'Crucian' and were created originally for the match anglers, and were not intended to grow very large. Hope this explains them a bit for you!

Re: The Carp!

Cheers Carptrooper. So...would F1's breed with each other or would they always come from a cross strain created at the fish farm? Likewise, do commons and mirrors or mirrors and grass carp ever interbreed?

Re: The Carp!

Hi northern eye, it is usually the norm that these type of x strains are sterile and as such will not breed, as well as the F1's, we also have the F2's which are a cross between 'Ghost Carp' and 'Crucians', also none of these crosses are meant to grow very large. As to your question; Do Common and Mirror carp interbreed? The answer is yes most definately, for they are both of the family called King Carp, ("Cyprinus Carpio"). 'Grass carp' will not interbreed with 'King Carp' because they are a completely different species of fish!

Fantastic shots Norfolk Boy!

Has anyone got any good ideas of decent banks near Oxfordshire or Northants?

Thanks

The above Crucian Carp was accepted but at the same weight as the current record; they now both share the UK record for the Crucian Carp which is: 4lb 9oz 9dms.

This claim from Gold Valley was thrown out because the fish in question was found to be a Hybrid; so the two huge Crucians of 4lb 9oz 9dms still stand as the UK Crucian Carp records.
