Re: "All carp look the same"...No they don't!

just to confuse matters dan,i have been coarse fishing for nearly 40 years,i have caught all species of carp, but i am totally lost as to the identification of what i regard as the "new" species of carp.i fished a water a couple of years ago which contained ghost carp, blue orfe and grass carp.

i would like to know how to identify them if they are stupid enough to grab my bait,
is there a rule of thumb,an easy way to differenciate between them

Re: "All carp look the same"...No they don't!

Soon you will be saying the commons are different species dependent on the lake that you catch them!!

Every fish is going to be different, its the same thing sea fishing, if you fish over rocks, they are darker, sand they are lighter. but its not an excuse to call them fully scaled, one scale missing, oooo scales in a line.

I am going to stick with ben on this one, fair enough crucian, mirrors, and common, and thats about it.

Re: "All carp look the same"...No they don't!

I am going to throw a spanner in the works here..... I'm a coarse fisherman of 30 years, and it has always been my understanding that to qualify as Crucian Carp they have to be caught from Lakes officially recognised as containing crucians. Or it has to be verified by a vet who is expert in their identification.
Plus..... you missed out one other carp...... the Leather Carp, that has no scales at all.
