Re: Casting Problems

I think you sound like you are pretty much there. You are spot on when you say you want to keep things simple. Ironically I find I more often tangle when I am NOT trying to cast too far. Can't win sometimes. All the best. Where you fishing by the way ?

Re: Casting Problems

Try different shotting patterns as the other guys have already suggested,
however a decent CLOSED FACE reel (like the ABU 501 or 506 for example combined with employing an underhand cast) should give a very good solution. the ABU's cast as far as any when line is correcly loaded (about 1/16 of an inch (1.5MM) from the lip of the spool - 1MM would be even better.
Not read the other replies that closely - wifes pestering me to give a hand round house right now - however loading the line as close to the lip of the spool as you can solves a lot of casting issues.
There's loads of used ABU's in the 500 series on ebay & not a lot of money at all (nearly giving some away)

Mainly hanging out at a place just ouside Ludlow called Froggats. It's well stocked and has been good for me and my lad Conor to get the hang of things. We are looking at Furnace Mill later in the year a it's not far from here. The river Teme runs through Ludlow so I fish there occasionally but have my hopes set on trying the Severn come spring.

I think the missus would kill me if I got another reel. Somehow we've managed to aquire 6 reels already between me and my lad. I'll certainly be looking at the way I'm shotting the line as a starting point and see where that leads.

Re: Casting Problems

The other thing that works is to feather the line, meaning that when you cast just before its hitting the water you tap the rim of the spool with your finger slowing the line down. Dont stop the line dead as you will end up in a big tangle, just gentle.
This light stopping of the line ensures that everything lands smoothly not it one lump, which is probably whats been happening.
