Question Hard to get a decent run??

Hi guys,
Im quite new to fishing and i was fishing today at todber and i caught a couple of fish but i had trouble getting a decent run.

I can see the line pulling tighter then it lets go is this a proper bite or do i need to wait for a screaming reel????
there was a guy fishing a couple of swims down from me and he caught a couple of fish and each one was a decent run!!

Can any1 help??

I don't know much about this (in fact I've learnt that the older I get the less I know) BUT you say you watch the line get tighter and then it lets go. Do you think that perhaps as it gets tighter the fish feels a resistance, gets spooked and lets go? Maybe you should let more line out and give it plenty of time before you strike. This is just me trying to help a bit; there's a lot of experienced guys on this forum who will help you, I'm sure. Kind regards and welcome to the forum.

yea i think thats what is happening, well it looks this way lol,
i have the drag set on my reel so it can take as much line as it wants with only a small lead wieght so would be little resistance im using a size 6 hook is this to big?? thanks for the help

id probably say what you were getting were line bites my bud ,,id sit on my hands till you get a full blown bite , back lead the line so its on the bottom this will stop liners as well .if not id look at your hooks some of the time the hook is threaded wrong so it leans backwards it should bend forwards in an aggresive manner this helps the hook hit home ,,good luck any probs drop me a line i can hep with your rigs ect
