Re: bite alarms

See here for some recommendations

Bite alarms help.

As for what to look for, the main thing is not to get tempted by alarms that are very cheap as invariably these are very poor and not that well made and so won't last.

In the 'old' days cheap bite alarms had a wheel which the line went over and when the fish pulled the line the wheel would turn, which then turned a vane inside the alarm which then blocked out the light going to a photoelectric cell which then sounded the alarm. Whilst these did kinda work they are not sensitive in any way and you really had to get a good run before they sounded. A lot of the really cheap alarms these days still use this same 'technology'. Mid priced ones still use a wheel but in a different way with the use of magnets which makes them more sensitive. The best alarms though don't have moving parts and instead detect vibration on the line which makes them far more sensitive. The better alarms of all types have a sensitivity control which can be useful on windy days or if you are getting a lot of line bites.

I personally don't like using alarms that much and so wasn't going to spend a fortune on one and instead bought a Fox Micron M. This uses a wheel but with magnets and doesn't have a sensitivity control. I've used this for about 3 years now and can't really fault it in all honesty. Personally for me I don't need anything more advanced, very occasionally I wish there was a sensitivity control but I only ever think this on very windy days as when the wind blows across the line it obviously tightens it slightly and I get the occasional single beep which is slightly annoying. However I'm not one of these anglers who feels the need to have their alarms turned up loud to broadcast their bites across the entire lake and only ever have it turned up as low as it will go so these occasional beeps aren't really an issue.

Re: bite alarms

A lot of my carping buddies have been raving on about the sunridge optonics, you get 3 alarms and a reciever for around 70 quid depending on where you look.

Re: bite alarms

If you want some alarms that will last you until you leave school , start shaving , learn how to drink beer (not this girly lager), find a partner settle down , have kids , have grand kids , retire , then look no further

these alarms are bullet proof

I found my set tonight the original ones , from the mid 80,s
new battery in them they started like new
