| Bite Alarms Hi all I've just started fishing again after a 20 year hiatus. i have subscribed to a coarse fishing magazine and am getting 3 bite alarms free. I have a rod that has 2 different sections. One for float and one for feeder. This is probably a really dim question but is it ok to use a swing tip rod on a bite alarm? i'll be mainly method feeder fishing. The place I go is very shallow and I can never get a decent bend in the tip of the rod without reeling it in a lot so I'm going to use the bite alarms instead. Cheers John |

| Re: Bite Alarms I take it you mean Quiver Tip and not Swing Tip? Firstly you say that you can't get a decent bend in the tip, can't you try just using a heavier feeder/bomb? If you are using a method feeder then you really should be able to get a proper bend in the quiver and it's not as if you want the quiver bent around that much anyway. If you can't then you may be making your groundbait too dry/wet and it's coming off as soon as it hits the water making the feeder become light again. Going back to your original question of can you use a bite alarm with a quiver tip. Technically yes you could but there would be no benefit in doing so. Bite alarms work best when the rod is pointed directly at the hook allowing the line to pull in a straight line and sound the alarm. Quiver tips work with the rod at an angle to the hook. If you were to use a bite alarm with a quiver, the quiver would still give you a more accurate and sensitive bite registration than the alarm would. Instead you'd be far better off using the float top with a bite alarm assuming the test curve was up to casting a heavy feeder. __________________ I've now added a fishing blog to my website Here |

| Re: Bite Alarms Hi peakoverload Thanks for the answer i appreciate it. Yes it is a quiver tip rod. It makes sense about using the float section rather than the quiver. I was thinking of buying a pellet waggler so I shall use that. I think you might be right about the method feeder mix being too dry. I fished the place last week and it was fine and I got a few nice carp and bream but this weekend I only caught one bream. That would add up. I'll practice with the groundbait and see if I can get it right. I seem to either make it so it doesn't come off at all or I can't cast without it falling off. Cheers for the help John |

| Re: Bite Alarms Just takes practise mate with the mix, sometimes I like to have it very wet and therfore will take longer to break down etc or quite dry so it breaks up on impact usually, depends how im fishing on the particular day. Good Luck mate! | Re: Bite Alarms Cheers Matt I know what you mean. i'm definately ring rusty. It's just a pity there aren't any decent places you can fish for free around the North West to hone your skills. I'm going to make it a bit wetter and heavier next time and actually just drop it in the water in front of me to see what happens. If it stays on but disolves in a minute or 2 I'll fish with it :) Any good places in and around Manchester worth visiting? John |

| Re: Bite Alarms Hi Mate, to be honest even when I make a mix very wet and compress it very hard around my method or in my mould after 10-15 mins there will be nuthin left on the method, not really mate, but most canals you can fish on a day ticket, and then you only pay if the bailiff comes round, which I have found to be VERY rare! dunno if the cant be arsed with the hasstle or what! so maybe your local canal would be a decent place mate? | Re: Bite Alarms Cheers Matt Yeah I'm going to make it much stiffer next time to make sure. We used to have a lot of nice tench on our stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool and you're right about the lack of bailifs so I might just give it a go. All the best John |

| Re: Bite Alarms Good Luck mate, if they do it's usually only a fiver which aint bad (so long as your catching lol) the club im attached too has a pre-baiting & groundbaiting ban, but does allow the method (which is kinda silly) so to get a bed of bait down I simply mix a very 'soft' method and have a decent amount of casts with that (before I attach the hooklink) simply to get a bed of the stuff down, then I will have another slightly stiffer mix which I will then use to bait up and cast with, so that rule is like I say silly!! in winter I have a stif mix and summer a soft mix and anywhere in between lol. Have Fun!! | Re: Bite Alarms Cheers fella I see what you mean about the baiting. It's like a poor mans spodding :) Speaking of poor men, if I see the Bailiff coming I will be doing a runner. I'm fecked if I'm paying a fiver for catching a fucking Perch :) |

| Re: Bite Alarms john wilson uses a feeder rod on alarms but points them straight i did fish with a myopic old lad who used a delkim on his bomb rod seemed to work said he somtimes head it before he saw it lol.. method g/b when you mix add water to crumb bit at a time working air into it you should be able to squeeze it into a tight ball but it must break apart relatively easy |
