| Re: stupid carp anglers OK, all take deep breathes and do some yogic relaxation stuff. I'm nearly 40, and it can be a tad rilling when a youngster comes up, but I like to think I am wise enough to know that I am not an out and out carp angler, so I can take advice, but I would always want to point out that I have been fishing for almost 25 years, (with a break of a few), and have seen many things in the fishy world. Very often its how a youngster will saythings that gets the whole issue of to the wrong start, instead of saying 'Your doing it all wrong mate', I would suggest that they start the conversation, along the lines, of "I use this, and its been working well", not trying to be smart arse, but being a helpful neighboring angler. Also, lots of kit can mean that tackle dealers is a good salesman. Once I saw a dealer selling a lot of kit, in 1996 or 7 the bill came to 500 notes plus, to the mother of a youngers, you beed this that and everything on the shelf. I found out that the lad was fishing a lake I knew, and did not need half of what he was sold. Exerience and watercraft=priceless, a good teacher/guide also priceless. | Re: stupid carp anglers Taking on the "I can see something in all that has been said" mantle. I have been fishing when some young oik has come up, started chatting them started asking "questions" about some of my older gear. I have newer gear too but sometimes take the old stuff because it works. I don't need a carbon landing net handle for 15lb+ carp because I will probably only land one or two. What I do need is something that has never let me down. I certainly don't need some snot rider telling me "Nah they only come out on meffud, I should know I've been catching bu@@er all on it for three hours, floating stuff just doesn't work". Maybe it's expecting too much at their age to expect some people skills ? One of the best tips I could ever pass on is ASK. If they are half as good as they reckon they are then they will share. If somone is struggling then a diplomatic chat to find out what they are doing ending in a "I know just what you mean, I was doing that and some bloke suggested I tried this, worked a treat.." rather than LOOOOOSER!! might help. Someone mentioned golf, well that's one sport where you need to spend a few quid to get started really. It isn't entirely necessary but it helps. Some people will want to give our sport a crack and are happy to shell out a few hundred quid to do that. The thing is that amount of money is a fortune to some and small change to others . I can see where you're coming from with the "all the gear and no idea" because I see it loads too and do have a quiet chuckle to myself sometimes but as soon as someone is willing to listen, gear or no idea it changes things. We all started somewhere and with whatever gear . I learnt more from watching guys fishing roath park lake and asking questions ONCE I realised they did not actually mind (as long as you are sensible and respectful in your approach). That and reading "float fishing " by Ivan Marks which revolutionised my float fishing as a kid . So don't give people too hard a time. Till they get that poundland rubber mallet out and start "planting" the rod rest poles. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk |

Also In my view, the angler who realises that they will 'never' know it all is the better angler, because no matter how much we may think we know, there will always be times when our ideas are turned completely on our heads; thats what makes our sport so absorbing. So don't assume that someone asking the questions is a complete noddy unless he gets that poundland rubber mallet out and starts "planting" the rod rest poles. __________________ My Web Site (The Average Coarse Angler) Happiness is Fish Shaped (It used to be woman shaped but the wifes getting on a bit now) |
