25 years since the death of richard walker

On the 3ND of August it will be the 25Th anniversary of the death of Richard Walker .
If it was not for the pioneering of this angler , how do you think angling would be like now if he had not caught classia .

Would we of had so many innovations in angling .
Dont forget His inventions included the electronic bite alarm and the Arlesey Bomb weight,
Thoughts

ps
worth a listen to

Re: 25 years since the death of richard walker

the guy was an icon, god bless him,

i grew up reading his books and articles in AT ,

if he had not caught clarissa somebody like jack hilton would have done,
but he was a big influence in the development of angling today

Re: 25 years since the death of richard walker

Yes anglers today just think he was an old angler who happened to catch the once record Carp Clarrisa, in fact he held several fish records and here are a few of the things he did mostly for us in the angling world.
  • wrote the first book about still water fishing with special reference to specimen fish.
  • Designed and built the first satisfactory carp rod.
  • Designed and made the first net big enough to hold a 50lb fish yet light enough to hold in one hand.
  • Invented the electric Bite alarm.
  • Invented the Arlesley Bomb now found in most anglers tackleboxes.
  • Devised the Balanced crust (a slow sinking bait consisting of paste/crust which comes to rest on silkweed or soft mud)
  • Invented Vanes, like dart flights, for float tops, visible at long range and able to takea bait to the right place (used by many pike anglers).
  • Invented a type of rod rest that ensured that the line would not be trapped between the rod and the rest.
  • Pointed out again and again that fixed spool reels needed rotating pickup rollers at a time when not one production reel was so fitted.
  • Campaigned for knotless keepnets year after year until Mr C.J. Field pioneered their commercial introduction; with the result that they are now compulsery.
  • Invented the single and double Grinner Knots named after his son 'Grinner'.
  • Was the first to detect the vibration bite from Barbel and explain how to detect it.
  • After hearing that a former colleague, Mr Leslie Phillips, at the Royal Aircraft Establishment at Farnborough had invented 'carbon fibre', Walker went rushing down there with Jim Hardy of Hardy Brothers to see how this new material could be used in fishing rods.
  • Was the first angler in the world to catch a trout on a carbon fibre rod.
  • Made a thorough investigation of the causes of loss of strength in nylon monofil, and discovered that it is due to either the effect of ultra-violet light in bright sunshine, or to wet oxidation, or both, refuting claims that monofil was rot-proof.
  • Plus many other things

Things have certainly changes , fish care for one

Even with the fact that he had multiple catches of carp laying on the bank to have pictures taken

Yes Nick but in those days it was common to keep Carp in soft loose-weave sacks with one Carp in each sack pegged out until it was light enough to take a photo of them at first light.
The Carp always seemed very lively and healthy in the mornings as well.

But nowerdays we dont use sacks and release them as soon as we have weighed and photographed them even in the middle of the night.

NB. Do you remember those huge flashes that used to blind everyone for miles?
I walked straight into the lake a couple of times after my mate took photos of me holding a fish because his flash blinded me and I couldn't see where I was going.
