Hook Line Advice Needed

My new club has a number of waters with large size fish from Barbel to Pike, Carp to Bream and on fishing one of their Carp waters I now realise I need to step up my tackle as I got smashed several times!

On my Carp rods I currently I use 12lb main line which I'm going to up to 15lb and use 10lb braid for hook link which I will upgrade to 12lb.

However the Carp also respond well to float tackle and I currently use 6lb mainline which I'm going to step up to 8lb but I don't know what to use for a hook link. I currently use either a 5lb or 6lb Preston Innovations Power Line for my hook links but this particular lake is very snaggy and by God the Carp know it and do everything they can to cut you off so I'm finding that my hook links just don't hold up to any abrasions.

Can someone recommend a good hook link that might be suitable or should I tie straight to my mainline? If I tie to my mainline how do I tie a hair rig, I've only ever tied hairs using the knotless knott?

If I do still use a hook link what is the best way to attach this to the main line, I've only ever used the loop to loop knot?

One last question, I use the Clinch Knot for tieing swivels but had two slip on me on large Carp in one day. This may have been my fault in not tieing it properly but I don't think so. I'm not too concerned because this is the only time this knot has failed me in the past but what do others use?

Re: Hook Line Advice Needed

either make a mono hook link and use a swivel or loop to loop or a blood knot.

after tieing the hair

make the hair with the knotless knot

tie your swivels /hooks with a palomar knot

or a uni knot

what rods are you using too?

12lb line with a 10lb hooklink sounds fine to me...

Cheers everyone for your replies. I'm not worried about my Carp Rods (2.25lb test curve) with 12lb mainline and 10lb hooklink it's my float rods that I'm worried about.

Currently I'm using the John Wilson Avon Quiver (in 'float mode') and am currently using 6lb line but think I need to up this to 8lb. My problem/question is to do with the hook link to use with this. As I say I currently use a Preston Innovations Power Line in either 5lb or 6lb bs but I'm finding that this just doesnt stand up to abrasions so was wondering if there was a particular brand that people could recommend? I had even wondered about using braid but I wouldn't have thought that this would work well with a float as it would have a different buoyancy to line and so affect bait presentation. But maybe I have that wrong?

Cheers for that, I'll give it a whirl. After another session of smashed hook lengths I've nothing to loose!

Re: Hook Line Advice Needed

When i used to do a lot of feeder fishing I always used a lighter hooklink than my mainline.
Bits since carp fishing I have done it the other way. ( I belive this is common by carp anglers)
I don't know exactly why?
The average braided hook link seems to now be 15lb plus and most people use a lower mainline casting.

Yeah that's been confusing me since I returned to the sport 3 years ago. As a kid I was always taught that your hook link should be lighter than your mainline partly for presentation but also for fish safety. In recent years ledger rigs that everyone used 10-15 years ago were branded "Death Rigs" and now we are told we must use "Safety Rigs". What I can't get my head around is how a rig where the hooklink is stronger than the mainline can be considered "safe"? Surely that means that if you do get a break it's more likely to be in the mainline above the feeder/bomb. If it's a running ledger than that's not really a problem (although do we really want fish swimming off with a long length of line) but if it's a semi fixed rig then even though the weight should eventually come off it has to be more "dangerous" than just loosing a hooklink?
