Reel advise (sizes)

Hi guys I'm looking to replace my reels as there on there last legs
I currently have shimano ultegra xta 12000
I guess the replacments are the new xsb/xtb

Now I problem is the sizes they come in are:
5500 and 14000 which Im concerned is a to small/big
I regulary cast to around 100yds and fish the margins.
The 5500 holds 270 yds of 12lb (I use upto 15lb)
now if I have say cast 100 yds will 150ish yards left on the reel be ample?
As the 14000 holds twice as much? Why would you need this much? I don't mind the bigger ones as I think they weight the same as my current reels and will balance my rods.

Why would you want 500yds of line on a reel? Is I because they are reel designed for spinning lures if boats and we use them for fishing carp?
I notice the top daiwa reels are around the 5500 sizes eg the entoh's

Many thanks

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

What I'm concerned about is that the lake I'm fishing has minimum line allowed of 15lb so I will only get about 260 yds of line in them!

So say I could cast 150 yds does it matter how much line is left on the spool when your fishing? I know that a fish shouldn't take hundreds of yds of line bit was wondering why they sell the 1400 version

yes , have you seen how many yds of line a fish will take when it runs , will easily do 20/50 yds .
i would say 1and a half time you max casting distance , plus backing to fill the spool

5500 Line cap. - 270yds/14lb plenty

bigger spool , bigger casts

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

In what circumstances would you want to bigger ones then? Would it e when using bigger lines? I don't want to buy the smaller ones then struggle with them. Would I cast further with the the 14000 then?

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

why would you want bigger lb lines , for distance fishing i use 10 lb the thinner the line the more distance

The bigger the spool the faster you wind the line in , more line on the spool per turn

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

When the rules dictate. How much line ideally do you want left on your spool (minimium) once cast out? As the 5500 hold 270yds of 0.35mm line and the smallest line allowed on the lakes 15lb. Of I could for example cast 150yds would 100yds left be fine?

Would the 14000 cast further?

Cheers guys

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

Not butting in or anything but have you conciddered using braid for your distance rod? The new braids are much thinner diameter than most monos. You could prob get at least another 100 yards of braided line on the smaller reel and still have the same breaking strain. (just a suggestion)

Re: Reel advise (sizes)

Ye I think I'm going to go for the 5500 and use braid when long distance. But the week in France I got coming up no braided mainline allowed and no leader of any kind. So am thinking of using x line straight threw or the ultima fluro coated anyone have by experience with them? Casting/sinking etc... I like to use slack lines when fishing.

Cheers guys
