Re: Winter carp

Nick is right on location, winter fish are less likely to be patrolling for their food. I would suggest a smaller bait than what you would use in the summer, and perhaps a sweet bait? Not sure if you are using boilies, or other baits, I favour meat and corn, but if going for any flavourings, i think that fishmeals are less good for the fish in winter.
A smaller hook size would also be agood idea.

Re: Winter carp

i go fishing at least onece a week to fish for carp on my local lake and i use smaller baits on the hook in winter, and I agree here. I’ve had more takes on these and I use small baits in the P.V.A bag. i dont use high protein baits in winter i have heard of anglers that high protein baits in winter can ruduce your chance of catching. i normaly use Birdfood ingredients for the winter and r Milk Protein Carp Baits

Re: Winter carp

Since I have started fishing again recently I have been visiting a small pond in Mathern, near Chepstow.

In the early Autumn it was so easy it was like cheating! I have been using match road and 3lb line as the stock is mainly under 10lbs and great fun to be had on that tackle. (OK that might be heresy in a Carp Forum!)

As the colder weather approaches I am tempted to leave it alone - or should I hit the sweetcorn and size 16 hooks?

Re: Winter carp

i fish all winter for carp but recently not had as many as expected so i went for a darker ground bait and a flouro pop up so it stands out against the dark background works a treat also location as nick r said ,last time i went there was a massive carp feet from where i was sat, facing me it must have been at least 16lb the water was crystal clear so got a really good view of it but they never come in this close so there habits must change in winter lovely to watch tho
