Re: anyone a Consultant for a fishing brand and how to become one like fox korda tfg

I have worked as a fishing guide and journalist in Spain and I filmed a fishing series that has been shown on ex-pat TV in Spain and has been bought by Discovery Reel Time for broadcast at some time in the future (their words).

During my time I was approached and I also approached a number of companies regarding sponsorship and consulting, as well as free lancing for a number of magazines around the world. With some I was succesfull with others I was not. I wont divulge who the companies are, because I want to remain anonymous on this site and just give advice and also recieve advice.

Unless you are right at the top of the food chain like Matt Hayes, John Wilson and the like you dont make much money out of it. Yes you get new gear and free bait and get to fish places that most others cant afford or just dont get to know about.

The main thing about being a fishing journalist or consultant is that you need to put lots and lots of hours in on the water. I am not talking a couple of days a week. I am talking about 6 or 7 days a week every week for years. You need to know exactly what you are talking about and be able to read the water and the conditions everytime. Know what the fish should be feeding on or being one step ahead and getting them feeding on what you want them to feed on without spooking them. You need to be able to cast to a penny at a 100m. Then when everything is going wrong and your super high tech bait from yibidee yabidee is not working then know to switch to something like a plain old single maggot to do the trick.
You also need to be technical to be able to feedback the information that the tackle companies need to make better tackle. Knowing how a rod is formed from the inside out and how different materials effect certain aspects of performance is essential. For example: You need to be able to say that a rod needs more or less of a cross diamond weave of Kevlar to give it more mid section back bone. In my opinion Matt Hayes is one of the best.

The downside is that everyone slags you off simply because they are jealous of you. They think they can do a better job, or know more or can cast further etc. But at the end of the day they either don't have the balls to approach the right people or simply can't write a good story, or as in most cases are not as good and as confident as they like to think they are.

There are a good few fishermen out there better than me, and some of those are on the forum, but being a great fisherman does not meen that you will naturally be a good consultant.

Probably the most important lesson I learnt was that you should never make your hobby into a job! it soon becomes a bore.
Sponsorship is good if you can get it, but you have to be very good!

To have any chance u need to be in the mags weekley with diffrent fish at diffrent venues. You need tobe able to travel to venues at the drop of a hat and be able to catch fish on demand.

And all that is hard to do when you have a full time job.

We could do with someone like you on the following site Portland Pirate. http://www.fishingwithyou.com

Someone with your expertise would be greatly appreciated.

i don't know mate they say don't mix business with pleasure and if your job was fishing you would not have it as a hobbie to get way and relax as it would just be like work.
But i wouldn't mind the sponsorships and do it part time.
