Unhappy First time carp fishing

Hi everyone.
I am not new to fishing by any means but I am new to carp fishing. I have always wanted to try it since I caught my first carp unintentionally a few years ago in the grand river and it was the most insane fight I have ever had. It swam from one side of the river to the other, I couldnt believe it.
I dont really know any places to carp fish around my area so that is why I have never given it a chance. But on Saturday I was watching the Fish n Canada show and they were in woodstock in a park. They were using bobbers which I thought was odd. They didnt go into any detail about the rigs and such so I didnt know if they had been suspening the bait in the water or use the bobber which lets the line slide down to a certain point but let the bait rest on the bottom. So they were catching them left and right and showing them feeding the ducks and the carp were all over the place eating the bread right off the top. So I went down there that same day and not even 15 minutes after I started, 2 guys came down and I started talking to them. It was the funniest thing because I said it was my first time here and I had came because I seen it on the Fish n Canada show. They started laughing and they said they had seen it that morning too and it was their first time there as well. So I baited the water with 2 cans or corn and dog food ( I read that dog food that is corn based is suppose to be really good). I baited my hook with Powerbait Carp Bait. I didnt catch anything so I switched to corn on my hook and still nothing. I was there for 3 hours and I never even had a bite. The other guys were there for about 1.5 hours and they never caught anything either. I am going to go to my local bait shop and see if I can get some special carp bait to bait the pond with and use bread like they were on the show.
So I guess my questions are...
If anyone can give me some tips on what there were doing? Like is asked, suspending or letting it sit on bottom? And any tips that might come in handy? I was fishing from 5 til 8. Is there a better time, such as the morning like most other fish?

I didnt realize the dog food floated lol so it was useless. I watched the dog food float back towards the bank and nothing came up and ate it. I was on the side of the water that the wind was blowing into because that is what I have always done with other fish. Is this a good thing to go with carp as well?
How much bait should I be putting in the water?
If I catch a fish should I put more bait in?
I guess any quick tips that might help.
Thank you to you all. This site has helped me a bit I believe. And some awesome pictures. I hope I catch a 20lb + fish. Oh man I would be so excited.

Re: First time carp fishing

Welcome to the forum ISF

Hard to give tips on carp bait, as every venue is different and carp are used to different bait on each lake.

Another way of finding out is by speaking to anglers who fish the venue on a regular bases.

There are so many bits on the market and so many different tactics, it'll take a lifetime to try them all out.

I guess you can start of with old fashion bait, bread, worms, sweetcorn, luncheon meat.

Halibut pellets/boilies are usually a good summer bait.....strong flavours like pineapple, tutti frutti etc work well in winter.

Some fisheries insist you only use their pellets....a lot really depends on the venue, you just need to experiment.

As master-angler already said, read a lot in forums, magazines but be aware, you don't get lost in all the bait offers you find there, it's a labyrinth of never ending 'New bait' offers.
