Carp Fly Fishing?

Going out tomorrow to a local pond and i am gonna try fly fishing for carp for a change of style.
Went to the pond yesterday and there was that many carp on the surface they were trying to eat leaves that were blowing on to the lake.
Never done any fly fishing before but i went out and armed meself with a new fly rod and reel and i will give it a go, those rods look a bit whippy so it should be good fun.
Has anyone else tried this, looking for ideas really.
I will take me camera just in case.

Thumbs up Re: Carp Fly Fishing?

Been thinking about trying it myself using artificial bread or floating dog biscuit superglued or hair rigged to a hook. Good luck & looking forward to hearing how you get on...

Re: Carp Fly Fishing?

Its called "The poor man's Bonefishing" here.....Lots of fun.
If they dont strike the instant the fly hits the water, dont waste alot of time waiting for it, recast. Especially if they're hitting cottonwood fluff. (match the hatch....whatever they're hitting that is falling onto the water)

Good Luck and Tight Lines

Nelson

Re: Carp Fly Fishing?

Yeah done it, wot a blast trying to get those carp up of the bottom when playing them on a fly rod.
Threw a load of crust in on the surface and then used a white fly to imitate bread.
Also had some cracking roach and rudd, next mission is mullet and bass from the sea on the fly rod.

Cool Re: Carp Fly Fishing?

I tried fly fishing for them a few years back, as Paul says Dog biscuits a la John Wilson works a treat also artificial bread Also Nestle Cheerios. The secet is to degrease the line so it sinks below the surface then the crafty Carp won't be able to see the leader so easily. Ever seen a hair on top of the Bathwater and seen the shadow it casts. That will spook any Carp PDQ.
Feed them up with real bait to get them confidently feeding then cast your bait to the same area but not in the middle of them or just to one side. Try not to line them i.e. your floating line hits the water hard right over the top of them. Use a floating line and degreased leader.....oh and if you hook one......HANG ON!

Best of Luck.

Shaun
