Question Whats the best boilies

Whats the best boilies for carp

OK I have a week off in june and as its along time since Ive fished with boilies for carp ( always use trout pellet paste or bread off the top )

So..... what boilies are catching at the moment or what boilies would you recommend including what size. The two lakes I have in mind are not heavy fished and only hold a few carp to 20lb+ so it not going to be fishing in a fish tank.

Thanks in advance

It really depends on what lake you're fishing mate. In one lake they might like it sweet and in another savoury. I've just started making my own (not revealing these ), but ones that have worked for me over the past year are:

Richworth Tutti-Frutti boilies and pop-ups (can't go wrong with these)
Richworth White Chocolate Pop-Ups
Richworth Bloodworm boilies
Dynamite Baits Marine Halibut Pellet/Boilies/Groundbait (the carp love it)
Dynamite Frank Warwick Pineapple Pop-Ups
Rod Hutchinson Scopex boilies

Pop-ups are great used in a snowman set-up or a zig rig

Hope this helps mate

Rob

Re: Whats the best boilies

well i cant really make a comment towards boilies because i havent really been into my carp fishing for very long! however the lakes i fish the fish seem to respond well to the white chocolate boilies

ive brought myself some nash bling boilies and nash squid and scopex boilies and the bling has caught 10 times more fish than the squid and scopex! maybe because the bling are red?!? i dont know but the fish seem to like them! personally if i was you i would buy a nut drill ... drill some pellets and fish with pellets as everywhere i have fished so far the carp have responded to pellets but.. NOT the high oil marine halibut one! (sorry to everyone who uses these) i read lots of reports of these pellets went and brought myself a bag and didnt get any luck! brought some trout high betane pellets and they work a treat! i have them in a bucket various sizes from 1.5mm too 8mm i drill the 8 mm and use those as hook bait 2 on a hair rig and then throw a bed of various sizes out around my hook bait a friend of mine also uses some high oil attractant on them too (smells like turkey grease!!)

sorry im not much help richard but im still learning

The snowman involves attaching a normal boilie and then a pop-up to a normal hair rig. The buoyancy of the pop-up combined with the 'normal' boilie makes the presentation rise above the surface of the lakebed. Ideal for getting your bait above silt etc. It's incredibly popular and has caught me carp at Bury Hill .

The 'Zig Rig' is a way of catching carp from any level of water, depending on where they're cruising. A pop-up is used to lift the rig up into the water while the weight stays on the lakebed. It's advisable to use a marker float first to determine depth of water. Once that's established, see where carp are cruising. If they're in middle water and the depth is 12ft for example, then set the rig at 6ft. It's highly effective but one downside is that you have to walk backwards while a mate nets the fish as the hooklength is so long!

I think the Fox book of rigs is pretty good Rich, but I picked up a lot from buying a few magazines

Re: Whats the best boilies

i wish tackling a new lake was as easy as just working out what flavour to use there is no magic boilie out there but there are good baits and then there is bad ones .
if you know what the going bait is then that will help .
firstly i would find out what the make up of the lake is ,is it a silty lake is it sandy gravely or weedy this will help you in firstly rig selection as one rig does not do all .
ok here are the main rigs that are commonly used

knotless knot rig (this is a line aligner rig with out the tubing on and does tend to drop fish )
line aligner ( rig very effective and simplicity it self )
D rig (you should find a post on how to make this one )
zig rig (fished off a running lead set up ) this can be made what ever length you want from a few inches to a few feet (depending on depth and where the fish are in the water layers
i will try and post how to make the above rigs by pitures like the d rig .
there are variation on these which you will adapte to make rigs such as snowmen which is done by lengthnig the hair
ok once you know what the lake make up is and you have picked your rig
you can go aheaqd and select you boilie if you knew which one to take in the first place .
now getting back to your original question (what boilie )
shelf life boilies do catch from the bag but have preservatives to keep them from going off , but do not become a long term food source
frozen boilies are best these have no preservatives in them and once the fish get on them and they get established as a food sourse then you are onto a winner
now this lead to what basemix do you have them on birdfood mix ,high protein base mix , fishmeal base mix . confused yet

so these below will hold you in good stead for starters and i would recommend bait size to be 10mm or 14mm

richworth tutti frutti (freezer bait )
nash scopex squid liver plus (freezer bait )
mainline active 8 (freezer bait )
mainline NRG (freezer bait )
below are tailsup bait and i would recoomend all these as i bait test for them but they do work very well
tails up protovit liver freezer bait
tails up sc25 (freezer bait )
tails up fu2 (freezer bait )
tails up far eastern (freezer bait )
tails up s and g freezer bait my on mix kindly made by tail up and on test at the moment already banked a couple of thirties from france .
also would reccommend cc moores blood worm (wafters )
and there meteor .
as you can see there a few but this is only a tiny fragment of what out there the list is endless ,most are freezer baits
now also all the matching pop ups as well
,but i again would reccommend solar baits pop up
but just remember boilies are not the be all and end all off baits below is a few to try out
bread surface fishing
maples
maize
sweetcorn
luncheon meat (plumrose bacon grill )
various home made pastes
the method (actualy not a bait but a method )
i could go on but i hope this makes you think about your choices as we all have different idea,s which work for ourself but remember if it not in the right location you might as well not bother .

tightlines
kevin

Re: Whats the best boilies

Nice one Kev, Mainline products are the dogs b****cks. My base mix for my boilies is Fusion by Mainline, but thats all I'm saying! For fishing 'The Method' I use Sensas Method Mix, sweet and nutty, yum Combined with 2 grains of sweetcorn on the hair, I can catch any carp in my club lake, they go mental for it!

Re: Whats the best boilies

wow he's confused me too! but i have been enlightened a little on why the lake i was fishing today only allows you to use frozen boilies im guessing they breakdown in less time and/or can be easier digested?

as it goes anyway i used bacon grill all day and caught loads but nothing over 4lbs

Re: Whats the best boilies

i am a fan of luncheon meat,it seems to be irresistable to so many species of fish,i can't wait to give it a try in france next year.
as for boilies,i am hooked on richworth tutti frutti's,they never let me down,
but don't you think it's a confidence thing.
i have a shed full of boilies i have tried once or twice ,didn't catch with them so am reluctant to use again, the same was the case with dave and his halibut pellets,
i am ten times happier sitting behind rods baited with baits i am confident with.

i am now using a local bait manufacturer called "catcherbaits"which are performing very well round these parts, some excellent boilies and pellets
