Homemade or shop bought ?

Firstly apologies if this thread has already been covered.
At the minute I am paying around £8 per kilo for my boilies, which to be honest is rather expensive.
Any way I am considering making my own as I can get most of the base mix for free, but before I splash out on a table and gun ect I was wondering how do home mades compare to branded baits. I know some people will say theres no difference but there must be a reason why the branded baits are so popular and highly priced.
I dont mind paying the money for quality baits which do catch me fish but if I can make my own and get the same results then great.
Ta for listening
Mad

Re: Homemade or shop bought ?

I tried making my own for my holidays last year, they looked ok(ish) but no matter how much flavouring i put in them they never really smelt scented. It was probably my own fault in all fairness.

If i was using them week in week out i would probably master the technique, but seeing as its a once a year job i haven't got the hang of it.

I'm sure there will be someone on here that has more knowledge than myself.

I am heading to France next Friday and all i will say is i am definitely buying boilies from a shop!

Re: Homemade or shop bought ?

I do like to make my own, I use a base mix, on here, in the baits section, supplied by Norfolkboy, a mix of semolina, brownrice flour and maize meal.
A flavour I almost always use is Condensed milk, and then add a fruit of my choice, often pineapple or cranbury. Colours are an option.
What i would say is that you may want to hold back on the flavourings as the carp has an extremely sensative sense of small and taste, so strong that it dwarfs ours.
Don't over do it, as this can put the fish off.
Good luck.

Re: Homemade or shop bought ?

i have just started to dabble in this bait making malarky and so far so good! i fished hard the other day with my newly made boilie and didnt get a sniff on it....but nor did anybody else fishing the lake so i think it was just a tough day

i am in the process of making a batch up and once done i will be taking them with me for a 24hr session with tj on friday so watch this space!

i think the only reason shop broughts are so popular is the fact they are there and easy.... making your own takes up time space ect and nowadays most people dont have the time

cheers

dave
