the best bait for carp i think are the ones you have the most confidence in! they always seem to work for me!

greg, while that is true, how do you get the confidence in them? By using them and catching.

I've caught more carp on sweetcorn than I have anything else, although I've caught my largest on boilies or flavored maize.
Thats just the hookbait, though. The groundbait, method, or packbait (used over here, especially in the east) are just as important, in my opinion, in getting the fish to start eating. My personal favorite is just sweetcorn, but that is when I'm fishing margins. At distance I'll either use calf manna (an anise-flavored unmedicated feed pellet for calves) or boiled maize.

Sweetcorn seems to catch more at local small pond....

There is a ban on floating baits.... is that cos its so deadly or to protect the swans?

i couldnt agree anymore. for one summer its all i did. well there was one weekend i lost sweetcorn and was stuck with betaine pellet and pepperami . the pepperami gave me the same quantity but not the weight.

I think its to protect the fish. Think about it, if you got some floating crust and a carp takes it, you strike and it can tare through its lips.
I fished a lake once called "bitter well" just outside bristol and i was outraged at the state of the carp, pretty much all of them had no lips at all so couldnt feed normaly. I spoke to one of the old boys there and he said it was because of all the kids/young lads/arragent anglers that use floating crust and dont care about the fish as long as they got one.
I am currently writing to the parish council to see if they can retire the stock because they are all fu**ed up and re stock it.

corn is best if not try some corn and if not try some more corn if still no fish try some corn! If you blank no carp were feeding go back next day and use some corn!
