Re: How to make maggots?

Put some meat outside in the summer and let the flies do their work

Re: How to make maggots?

you could leave a couple of maggots to go to casters in a fishtank or large tub, use some very fine mesh ( like mums old tights!) to seal it, keep it in a warm room not the shed, the casters will hatch to flies, mate and lay eggs on any food in there. Old fruit like bananas are safer than meat as less chance of E-coli!

this way the maggots have not been exposed to any disease and are safe for fishing with, once the maggots appear add some bran or saw dust as the liquid they excrete can be foul smelling, let the maggots grow on to a decent size and the transfer to a cool place to slow them down from turning to casters too quick.

Clean the tank out and add a few of the new maggots in the warm and the process will continue, whilst the ones in the fridge should slowly turn, a couple of tanks and you could stagger the process so you always have maggots. any excess maggots can be frozen and mixed with ground bait for Carp fishing, Carp love the odd dead maggot. or be left to go to casters, once they are caster they should be stored in a sealed plastic bag with no air in it , in the fridge and will last for ages.

It is alot of fuffing about but can be a cheap way. Opening the tank outside lets the flies escape without filling the house with them, changing the food regularly is a good idea too as the smell does get bad, and a small amount of old meat ( chicken bones is a good one after the sunday dinner or a KFC) help plump the maggots up, but do not leave to go rancid as it can make you ill when you handle them.

Re: How to make maggots?

in the summer yes, but in the cold they go dormant so will not breed if flies or hatch if casters, setting up heaters etc makes it too expensive, cheaper to buy the odd pint or two as you need them in winter, only makes sense if you do not have to get complicated as the couple of weeks it takes is expensive for the volume of maggots you get unless you do it on a massive scale.

Re: How to make maggots?

If you want I will scan some pages out of some fishing books I have that show you ways to get cheap natural baits, I will email them too you in the week when I get time, or I will post a thread with some simple baits and what to do with them, there are a lot of free baits available in the wild.

What other species are you hunting other than Carp? Certain baits are better than others for particular species.

Re: How to make maggots?

I will spend some time tomorrow and get some ideas together for you for simple cheap or free baits to make the fishing a bit more fun.

what sort of rigs and methods do you use?

Are you allowed to use Boillies on your lakes, as I have a good recipe for cheap homemade ones ( if mum will let you in the kitchen!) INCLUDING pop-ups?

Sorry I cannot do it tonight but I have been away for the weekend and I am shattered tonight, will try to do it Monday or Tuesday.
