Re: How to make maggots?

I have never bred my own maggots but I remember reading an old Match Fishing book which descibed a method similar to the following; which I extracted from an Irish web site (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/archi...-267363.html):

Quote:
Go to the butcher and get a beef heart (for a 1/2 pint of gozzers which are like extra large extra juicy maggots)
Put it in a biscuit tin with holes punched in, this is because the bluebottle lays its eggs in the dark. And leave it out in the garage for a day.
What you want to get is a patch or 2 of fly eggs the size of a 2 euro coin.
Then take the heart and wrap it up in a newspaper like a fish & chips package, and wait 5-10 days.
There is no smell as the newspaper keeps it in.
Open every few days to check. It will stink a bit, but the maggots get bigger and finish off the meat, leaving only stringy bits. When the meat is gone, tip them into sawdust or bran (not so good) to clean themselves.
I would rather buy a pint or two from the tackle shop instead of going through all that pilava; but someone in another country may not be able to buy them as easily and would then need to breed their own.

Re: How to make maggots?

my friend once was unfortunate to be eating brambles and came across a maggot inside lol
there might be a chance thell be found in them
i kno this isnt much help though

but i remember once seeing on a website to
leave something like fruit or meat to rot outside for a few days
and the flies will lay eggs and theres yer maggots

and then just put them in the fridge with plenty of carrier bags
to keep the smell away and there all ready to be used

Re: How to make maggots?

I really wouldn't bother making your own maggots. It really isn't worth the hassle. They only cost a few quid for a pint. I saw a fishing programme once that went to a maggot farm.

HORRIFIC!!!

The smell was unbelievable apparently.

If you've a garden then dig up some worms. Bread is a brilliant bait. Just a standard white loaf. You can use it in so many ways.
