Slugs as a Carp bait

Hi all,

I am intrigued to know how many people have tried slugs as a Carp bait before?

The first time I ever tried a slug was a friendly fishing competition with some friends, and a slug appeared from the grass, I popped it on the hook and within 10 minutes I'd hooked a 16lb common carp! I couldn't believe it because the fishing that day had been very quiet. These days I still fish with slugs (if I happen to find a few) and I have to say, they make for a great Carp bait...

Has anybody else had any experiences with slugs before? I'd love to hear any success stories!

Dave

Re: Slugs as a Carp bait

I was told by an experienced Carp angler (in his 70's at the time) that he used to collect the slugs and soak them in Beer/Ale to enhance them! The slugs would soak in the beer and swell.
The better species are the Big Brown ones. (technical terms used) I havent used them since I was a kid. Dad wouldnt allow me to waste his beer too much back then! I dont remember catching any monsters! But we didnt have boilies back then so I suposed they were used to eating more natural foods!

Great stalking bait for chub that you can see. Just remember if you can see them they may be able to see you. If they do, you'll know. Best tip is to cast at the tail. That's right plop down hard on the tail. Mr Chub will turn and grab it. Hold on to your rod, your hat and everything else too. I've only caught a couple trying this but have been told that unless the chub just died this rarely fails. Course the first challenge is getting close enough to spot Mr chub before he spots you and vanishes.

Re: Slugs as a Carp bait

Also heard they are good bait for barbel ....must admit, I never tried slug for bait....might give it a try next time, if I can bring it over me to touch those slimy things

Is there a certain way to hook them?

Wear light colored clothes- white and light blues. So you'll be less of a dark silhouette against the sky.

Great responses guys!

I have to say, I haven't heard of or tried what Devon Born & Dorset Bred suggested before, and soaking the slugs in Ale :) Very interesting idea though, and I dare say I will try it sooner or later.

It does beg the question though, if one was to fish in Ireland, would one have the best luck with Guinness? lol :)

All good things that happen in Ireland - are usually Guiness related...
