Ucluelet B.C. Fishing Report: Salmon and Halibut

2009 has been a great year!

The entire northwestern coast of Canada and the US have been rebounding from unproductive 2008, and Ucluelet BC is hopping! The fish here have been all over the place.

One of our guides, while having 13 years experience, said he was more excited to be on the water than he had been in a long time. Why? Because the fish were biting.

Here, we catch Chinook salmon (Kings), Coho salmon (Silvers), Sockeye salmon, and Halibut.

Starting in May we were catching 10-30 lb Chinook salmon, and as the summer went on the fish got bigger. By mid-July we were catching good numbers of Chinook 15-45 lbs and continued through most of August.

Coho followed a few weeks behind the Chinook, but they were all over this summer. They bit anything we gave them.

The weather has been nice, and the waves have not prevented us from hitting our favorite banks, including the Lighthouse Bank, Big Bank, and the wreck, and others. We mainly troll for the salmon and halibut using downriggers.
