| First trip, what do I need? I've been invited onto a charter by my mate Nick at work. It's on the Carrick Lee sailing from Newhaven in February (on my birthday ). Its a wreck trip for cod and pollack. Anyway, I'm a noob when it comes to boat fishing, so what do you guys recommend for a good rod/reel set-up? Is an uptider a good all-rounder or should I go for a straight boat set-up? Also, what reel and line? This is basic, but I don't want to be fishing with the wrong gear. I have SAS2 suit etc, so I'm ok in that dept. Cheers Rob |

| I'd say either Waggler and maggot to far bank and or quiver tip sandeel or lug Sorry Rob couldn't help it mate ................. Try a 20 - 30 lb class outfit as you will be in deeper water so cannot uptide with great effect. Suggest Mackeral fillets and whole squid, for Coger, Shads and Fire tail jelly worms for on the drift. As the set up Richard mentioned. Have fun. Oh and happy birthday for February Quote:

| Re: First trip, what do I need? hi rob i do alot of wrecking in the channel for cod and pollock and as already said a 20-30 lb class rod with a 7000 abu sized reel and 50lb braid is what i use for sandeel, or shad work, also if you are using lures take plenty. i would take 15 or so 5-6" shads (i like strom shads and calcutter shads) you will probaly will be fishing in 150-200 foot of water, so id have a 6foot 50lb mono shockleader with 12" boom or french boom with a 6-15 foot trace of 30lb line with a 4/0-6/0 hook if using sandeel or your shad, as for weights id take plenty of 8, 10 , 12oz leads with rotten bottoms/ paper clips and 2or3 1lb leads just in case you anchor at slack water for a big old snotty or a bonus ling,in which case 8/0 hook on a short 150 lb hook lenth on the end of a short 40-50lb mono trace, as for bait frozen mackerel or fresh pout flappers. the resone i use 30 lb trace line is so it snaps when you snag the wreck in stead of loseing braid, but doing this keep an eye o n you trace for damage,(cod and pollock do chaff the line up ) when fishing for the cod and pollock you will be drifting and i drop my lure to the bottom and then reel up 30 turns and then back down and up and so on . the skipper will tell you when the wreck is coming up it this point i drop to the bottom and reel up and extra 15 turns(45 total) ,but be quick or you will be in the wreck,as you go across the top carry on with 30 up and back down. when the skipper tells you that you are comeing off the back of the wreck you must try to get your lure down behind the wreck(its normaly where the cod are)and carry on with 30 up and back down. just a tip cod are normaly closer to the bottom and wreck than pollock which are higher up in the water, so if you have had loads of pollock try reducing the amount of turns up to 15 then you concentrate things more on cod.but this time of year the will mainly be pollock around also changing speeds that you reel in at it can change your sucess rate of your catch. if your are using sandeel it very simalar just done a bit slower if you wanted to pirk/jig for cod and pollock id scale up to 50lb rod and a 45lb shock leader with you pirk on the end, but im not a lover of jigging ,as it even harder work that the above shad method hope that little essay helps and any questions il try to help happy birthday cheers |
