Boat Championship 2004 – Fishing Forum members

Boat Championship 2004 – Fishing Forum members
Wight Huntress Gosport

The day started at 4.30am got in my car and I was off.

After a two-hour drive I was down Gosport and meet up with the guys

In the competition was
Gus
John

Ben

Andyg
Downsouth
JulianS
Andrew
And me

The bait
Gus had collected some great rag, squid, sand eels and Hermit Crab. Mackerel we fished for once we set sail

The rigs
Flowing trace and bream rigs

The Day

We set sail at 7.30am and sore a very rare sight of a whale some 40 feet long, which was sadly dead. Dave radioed the coast guard the position and we sailed to the first mark.

It was such a shame that for many of us our first sight of a whale in UK waters was that of a dead one.

At our first anchor point we fished for mackerel. Working in teams of twos - one fishing one unhooking.

We soon had enough mackerel for our days fishing, as they seemed to be everywhere.

Next we switched to our rigs and the match was on. With a variety of bait going down we knew it would not be long before we found the fish.

Within a few minutes bream and mackerel started to be brought on board. Other rigs such as hermit and mackerel fillets were being striped clean by what must have been thousands of bream.

As the morning progressed it was starting to be a two horse race between Ben and Andyg, both targeting bream and other small fish.

Right it was time to move off to the tope grounds but unfortunately the anchor had got stuck fast so we were stuck on the inner mark till help arrived to free us up.

The bream continued to come aboard with the odd pout ect . Me I was after big fish only, and ended up with a ray of 8-9lbs on of two caught that day. Andrew caught the other ray, which was about 2-3lb.

With the anchor free we set off to fish down tide of the famous fortresses (Drifting behind them). Target fish were mackerel, bass and Pollock

On our second drift a big cheer went up as a lovely bass came up making JulianS day. The rest of the drifts returned mackerel only

Overview
Great to meet up with all the guys, and what a great way of spending a sunny Sunday. Our first boat competition was a great success and sets the standards for next years competition.

BUT WHO WON
A total of 51 fish were caught

In first position of the first boats championship 2004 was
Andgy with a great total of 169 points
Second place was Ben with 78 points

Well done to the two top places as they put their heads down and fished hard

Andgy won £100.00 in tackle vouches from the Fishing Forum and great wrecking tackle donated from Gus Angus - to view Guses wrecking gear | Click Here |

Re: Boat Championship 2004 – Fishing Forum members

well i caught plenty of macky, about 5/6 bream and a pout, nothing special but im still happy with it
no sun burn for me, another half hour in the sun and i recon i would have done but i have got a nice tan now
it was good meeting up with every1 and every1 was really freindly and helpful
about the whale, my mum said it was on the news last night, its still floating in the solent, they recon its about 40foot long and probably a sperm whale, they also had an interview with a fisherman who found it who fits the discription of our skipper, was our skipper called dave???

Re: Boat Championship 2004 – Fishing Forum members

Cheers guys, but I have to be honest – Ben and I were the only ones really trying to win! Well, in saying that, we were the only ones trying to win who weren’t handicapped with –25 points and only one hook! The real thanks go to Gus, John and Richard who were very sporting on the day (except when Ben was catching me up and they were cheering him on!!!!!!!!).

THEY DID HOWEVER TAKE THE MICK ALL DAY!!!!!

Just because I was catching lots of little bream! No, sorry, not just because of the little bream, it was also because when I caught my beautiful pout worth a prizely 11points, it was so small I didn’t even know I had hooked it!

Anyway, we were fishing a competition and the rules govern how you fish and what you fish for! Believe me, if they had all been catching doggys, smutt, tope etc. I would have dumped my bream rig pretty quick and fished on the bottom.

I think I caught 13 bream, 2 scad, a pouting and my 5 point scoring maccy – correct me if I’m wrong Richard!?

Great day, even though it didn’t go to plan because our anchor got stuck.

Roll on Fishing Forum Boat Comp 2005!!!!
