Rods

I'm hoping to be able to go boat fishing fairly regularly from now on. My question is, if you could only have one rod (and reel) for boat fishing what type would you go for. I'm not particularly bothered about makes and whatever just weight class etc. I know ideally I'd probably have a couple of options to suit wrecks, uptiding etc. but the wife won't look at it that way and will just see it as me wasting money and why can't I just use my beach rod.

hi mate the diawa t.d.x. range are super all round rods you have a choice of 12/30 & 20/50 which are good all round rods for boat fishing we match them with the penn 310 gti and 320 gti with level wind loaded with braid you can't wack it mate.

Thanks Gus, I think I'll get something cheap to start until I'm sure I enjoy it and can get out on a boat regularly (especially as I have to replace my beach rod ) and then everyone can chip in for my birtday and Christmas presents. Presumably a rod around 20 to 30 would be a good compromise and a level wind reel?

for reel i would say penn 320 and rod i got the abu equaliser for my 1st boat rod and it was ok for conger and pollack so thats a good alround (20-30 class)

yes mate 20 - 30 lb is a good start the reason we have level winds is because the last thing you want to think about when playing a good fish is getting your line back on evenly.

OK, I've seen a dirt cheap rod (and I mean dirt cheap!) that I think I'll go for. If it breaks after a few uses, which sounds familiar, it won't matter too much and if I get to boat fish regularly I can upgrade. Thanks for the advice everyone.
