Forum Smoothound boat trip Lady Helen Penarth Report

Lady Helen Penarth Smoothound trip

With us locking out of Penarth marina at 7pm we all met up in the car park at 6.30am to get our passes. With a few hellos and hand shakes we boarded Lady Helen.

After a quick discussion on what we were going to do for the day a cunning plan was made and set out for our days Smoothound fishing trip ( quick tip if the skipper suggests " well guys we can do this but I recommend that we go here " then go with what the skipper suggests ever time )

The morning was over cast and quiet cold early on with high tide being 12meters ish and at 12.

Smoothound Tackle
Uptider Rods and Multipliers loaded with 15lb-25lb mainline

Smoothound Rigs
Mainline 3 foot traces (50lb) with 4/0 strong hooks riged as single or pennel ( pennel rigs for whole squid baits) . All fished on gemmi grip leads 8 - 10oz

Baits

Peeler crabs , squid , mackerel and king tiger prawns

After the anchor had dropped on our first mark out went the rods and bait. The first mark was a sand bank with the rays in mind.

So now settled down it was not long before the rods started to knock and the fish started to be landed.

Andy had a nice surprise 13lb 16oz Tope which gave him a cracking fight and a PB

ANdy with his Tope

Mike with another cracking smoothound

And I dually tried to kill myself bring in a nice little 18lb conger on the full tide flow. Man I’m I unfit

My conger

The sun finally turned up and with the dropping of the tide and all having fish the next step of our cunning plan was to move out into the channel and hit a mark for more smoothounds

Once out and anchored the fishing went mad with loads of smoothounds being boated both common and starry

Marks (Pross) PB not bad as he has never used an uptider or mult before

At slack water and needing a little brake we pushed back in to mark number three to fish the flood tide. And yes you guest it even more smoothounds

John and Me

11lb common

So what a great day was had by all with some PB being broken. Massive thanks to Mike and Dan for a cracking day out yet agian on board Lady Helen Penarth. http://www.ladyhelencharters.co.uk/

I think John was the top angler on the day with andy closely followed . I just went for the big ones

Loads more pics in mike fish gallery

Re: Forum Smoothound boat trip Lady Helen Penarth Report

Course we don't serve smooth hound with HP thats for covering the crab with the hounds loved it!!!!!

Excellent day weather wise, fishing and company. I may even start to think that Richard isn't the bad luck talisman that i've labelled him with after fishing next to him and getting 8 hounds a couple of congers and a small eyed ray.

only thing that was missing was that Richard didn't put the kettle on half as much as he should of!!!!

Again an excellent day cheers for arranging it Richard
