Fishing out of Torbay

I have just got my first fishing boat so i have no idea really of good spots to fish out of the Torbay area. I have got a 16 ft bonwitco with a 30hp johnson outboard. How fdar out of Torbay (Brixham) do you think it would be safe to go in this boat?

Then considering the distantce can you reccomend a couple of good fishing spots to me e.g. wrecks/reefs/sand banks?

Thanks
Joe

Re: Fishing out of Torbay

Thanks Omahayank

Well can any one tell me if it would be safe enough to go about 4 miles out in a 16 foot boat on a calm day?

Re: Fishing out of Torbay

Depends on lots of things ,the forecast, tides, how confident you are with the boat.I presume you have all the safety gear and a DSC Vhf set onboard......

Remember i might be flat calm when you go out ,but whats the forecast,.....

Re: Fishing out of Torbay

Yeah i would never go out without checking the forcast. When you say safety equipmet do you mean anchors, oars, auxilary engine etc? For the first few times i go out I will be going with some one that has been boating for over ten years so i should be ok to start with. Just wondering what distances my kind of boat is safely capable of.

If there is other safety things i need then please let me know as i am off to a boat jumble soon so i might be able to pick some of it up then.

Thanks

Re: Fishing out of Torbay

Oh my...mr gofish101.

I got a boat at Teignmouth and can let you know some good marks....pm me.
You can go out a long way in a 17 foot boat but you really do need to know what you're doing. I usually try to go with another boat if it's more than 10 miles out. My boats no bigger than yours. if you read the marie rose thread you can see one of the problems we face as boat owners.
Safety equipment? There is no end and don't listen to your wife when she says it's just gadgets to play with. You have to have lifejackets for as many people as you will take out, fishfinder sounds unneccesary but its a sounder and tells you if its getting too shallow, gps plotter so can get back in if fog comes down and it does, compass in case your electrics go down and they will, flares of course, radio so if all else fails you can just shout help, actually its a good idea to do the ryc vhf course, only takes a day and you get a call sign and really understand how the whole radio thing works, ie which channels to use for what.
I guess the most important thing I can say to you is an old boating saying that you ignore at your peril.....if in doubt.. don't go out.
i'm going out tomorrow, sunday 4th june, call me if you want to hook up, only lure fishing for bass on the sandbanks, but should be some good fishing. my mobile is 07737740581. Gonna be out about 12 for a couple of hours.

Cheers Jules
