Boat Fishing trip on the 11 July with Gary Cool Flow Gosport

Sunday morning 4.00am and the alarm clock goes off, oh my god it’s early. Me and wastedman (Peter) have a cup of coffee and look at each other thinking are we mad – but no we are off fishing

After a two-hour drive through a lot of rain we make it down to Gosport and park up. The rest of the crew soon joins us and we are off

First stop is to get some mackerel which was done with ease, catching from only a few feet below the boat on feathers. I start thinking to myself this could be a good sign

Steaming for about 30 minutes we archer up on one of Gary’s marks and down the lines go. Using a variety of baits from hermit crab squid and mackerel, we all wait for the action to begin

Its not long before the fish start coming aboard – Tope, smoothound, dogfish and ray although a bit slow at least we were getting some bites and fish . The sea was still choppy and the rain had come back, which put a few of the boys out of action

At one point an English record was about to be broken
I put down a whole mackerel side on a flowing wire trace after my 40lb tope that I have set myself to catch this year

Ten minutes late a thump and then a strong take and I was it to something big. The guys cleared the back of the boat so I could settle into taking this monster of a fishing that was just taking line.

10 minutes later and I was still bringing her in, the boys give me lots of helpful advice like – For f==k sake hurry up and god you’re a wimp.

Oh my god its a record breaker

At this point I though I was going to die ever muscle in my body was at its end. Finally some colour – What! Brown not grey of a tope, yes it was a ray coming up backward in the full tide flow (we were using 1lb-1+ of lead weight)

So how big was it, about 14lb Thornback Ray – lovely fish but would have been a lot easier to come in if it came in the right way

Time for a move and after a little chat Gary took use to another mark, which was on the edge of a bank, a few more fish and the day ended

Summary
What a great day out, although the weather was poor the company was great (Gus I’ve caught a rain coat story made us laugh)

Gary was great and I have never been on a boat were the tea was non stop, sausage sandwich cooked for us in the morning and a stew cooked for us by his good lady severed piping hot on board
