Braid

I have just taken delivery of a Daiwa Kenzaki 6-12lb braid rod. Does anyone have an opinion as to what size braid I should use. As the rod has a sensitive tip I was going to load it with 14.3BS braid, in order to keep the lead size down, but have been told this could be a bit light.

Any opinions chaps.

Fred Budd

Re: Braid

It depends on what you are going to use it for and where.

Re: Braid

Hi Dave

Principally bass & bream, off the south coast of England

Also in Portugal for other species on one of your sharking trips, if appropriate. Not on my next trip though.

I am coming out on 23rd and will e-mail you next week regarding bookings. Please, please pay the weather man so we get out this time. I mustn't disappoint my grandson.

Nice to hear from you

Fred Budd

Re: Braid

Hi Fred, i did not realise it was you.
I would suggest that 15lbs approx braid would be ideal for the species unless the ground is particulary snaggy.re the 23rd we had a big blue shark on tues 9-5-06 that was over 100lbs, first of the big females.

Re: Braid

Hi Fred,
I reckon the 14lb braid you were going to load up sounds about perfect. If you haven't bought it yet then get it off this site, best I've found and at truly great price. Very quick delivery and hasn't let me down yet even though I fish some fairly rocky areas. Just remember to put a good bit of stretchy of mono front
end, I usually use flouro to be on the safe side.
Cheers Jules.

Re: Braid

Hey Jules,

Im going to load up a reel full of braid for the fishing off the skerries and for pollacking - do you need to put a load of mono on first and then attach this to the braid so theres a cushion ?

Got another reel loaded for the conger and wrecking !!! fancy getting out soon with us ?

Re: Braid

Hi Tommy, i always leave some old mono on the reel before i load the braid on, also if the depth you intend to fish is not to deep you need only load a 100metres spool.

Dave

Re: Braid

Tommy you are going to get 2 schools of thought responding.

personally the rod and the reels clutch are my shock absorbers and if I didn't want a no stretch line I would stick to mono rather than pay out for braid....

If the ground is snaggy then a hard nylon leader of around 3-6 foot makes sense because most braids 'nick' easily and significantly weaken. Fireline xds is the exception but is a lot thicker than many others so it's swings and roundabouts!

I use 14lb fireline (normal) and 20lb whiplash on my light gear (mixture of rods between 6-12lb classes) which seems to go well with 400 - 600 size reels. As already said use a nylon backing on all but the very smallest reels - and even they benefit from a bit.
