fish finder?

has anyone got a bottom line, tournament 480 max fishfinder?

a friend of mine has recently brought one and it's been on the boat about 4 months and it now says bottom transmitter failed. we've just tried a new transmitter and some of the time it still says transmitter failed. when it does work it doesn't seem to pick up any bottom. we've only tried the new transmitter with the boat moored up in the harbour, but i would have thought that it should still find the depth.

anyone got any advice/ help with this.

many thanks.

First get your paperwork out and phone the number ( think its on page 2 )

transmitter failed Did you check all connections ?? as its amazing what a bit of damp can do to a BNC plug

Re: fish finder?

yeah connector checked and all the pins are there.

the replacement does give the chart but no bottom. i don't really think it's gonna be too reliable to be honest.

if my friend can get his money back could anyone reccomend a decent and reliable fish finder for about £200

Yes, I recently bought a.....
Lowrance X125
5" screen
massive 480x480 resolution
2400w
16 level grayscale
easy to navigate menus
with temp sensor

http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/X125.asp

Miles better than my last. Paid £199 from JGtech and it arrived the next day.

Ok did you check with a meter i.e end to end resistance check - as its amazing how easy copper windings can snap in a cable or the solder jionts can decay . Being ex electronics tech I can say that 90 % of all faults are cause by connectors

But if its not working just send it back !!

Very good system for the money but do not forget - Navman or Humminbird

Re: fish finder?

the boat is coming out of the water on saturday for the hull to be cleaned, i think my friends gonna mount the new transmiter then too and see how long it lasts.

if it were me it would go straight back, if it's not reliable there's not much point in having it.

Re: fish finder?

I've got a garmin blue fishfinder and Lowrance plotter....both excellent bits of kit. Only bit of advice I would offer is..don't get a split screen plotter/fishfinder, just too much info in too small a place, also switching between functions gets tricky. Get the biggest you can afford of both.
Regards, Jules.
