Question Rainbow Trout as bait?

Hi,

Anyone tried rainbow trout as bait from the boat?

I've just read an an article in Boat Fishing Monthly and Graham Pullen was bagging up on the stuff late in the year when fresh macky was unavailable.

I'm sick of mushy washed out frozen mackeral, even the Ammo stuff and thought I might give it a try. Asda sell fresh whole trout for 98p each but I'll look out for a cheaper supply.

I'm thinking a nice oily whole trout flapper might make a great tope bait!

James

P.S Anyone know where to buy onion bags/sacks without the onions??

Hi James,

try a builders merchant for the bags, tell them you need to make up some sand bags.

Try asking your local supermarket for some onion sacks or carrot bags.

Re: Rainbow Trout as bait?

If you live local to a trout farm, try approaching them about their 'die-offs'. They might be a little ripe when you get 'em but they apparently make great groundbait.

Re: Rainbow Trout as bait?

I've used trout as bait and in a sack as rubby dubby and can assure u it works well for tope, conger and unfortunately dogs.
It's also a much tougher bait than macky after it's been thawed out from frozen.
Get friendly with a good fly fisherman who catches more than he eats, thats how i get mine.

Re: Rainbow Trout as bait?

If you want some hessian sacks go to your nearest pet food shop...they can't get rid of them, very strong and a few knife holes do the trick. If you know of a small abbatoir you can get animal blood for free but you need to ask what day they slaughter...they don't keep it hanging around!
Bran is a very good absober of liquid and very cheap from supermarkets, you can watch the slick carry out from the back of the boat.

Re: Rainbow Trout as bait?

Over here in usa, it is very rare, if not illegal to usa trout as bait. People whjo catch rainbow trout use them for food or throw them back./ Nearly all are stocked by the state or pond owners. Catching native trout is rare.
