Tackle & Bait

Just a couple of tackle tips, for uptiding in the Bristol channel.I`m sure you all know alll this already, but just in case here goes......

8oz Geminis are ESSENTIAL,altough you can hold bottom with slightly smaller ones ,you are guaranteed to be fishing on the bottom where the fish are with the 8oz ers !!!!

Uptiding....Mainline needs to be in the 18-20lb region, shockleaders (personal preferance really) have their up and down sides, definatly a plus when when you get a sizeable fish close to the boat and the pressure is at a max from the tide run, minor downside can clog with little bits of debris.

Downtiding.....20-30lb mainline,leads of 3/4 to 1lb will be needed

Terminal tackle.......Simple running ledgers are best, and are least likely to get tangled in the fast tide run.Plastic booms are great, but keeping it simple pays off, least amount of resistance to the tide makes your life much easier.Stick to jsut a simple bead, link swivel and gemini clip on the end to allow the trace to be detached for rebaiting and more importantly when lively fish like smoothouds come aboard.Pennel rigs of around 2-3 feet in length with good quality 4/0-6/0 hooks.

Pennel Rig hook setup

Simple end tackle pays divedends with less tangles

Baits for the day.... Peeler crab is a big advantage for the Smoothies, they will take squid but crab is the biz.Squid is great all round for the Rays,Conger,Huss.Sandeel will tempt Rays ,Mackerel will tempt Conger, Bull Huss.Raw Tiger prawn has been good for the smoothies in the past also.

The doggies will take everything you can throw at em !!!!

I`m sure Richard will be bringing along some "secret" bait ,and cant wait to see what it will be

Lookin forward to seeing you and putting some faces to the posts .....

Re: Sunday June 11 2006 Lady Helen Penarth

Looking forward to this, I'll get my traces made up one evening this week and pick my bait up on Saturday. I just hope I don't bring my usual sea fishing luck with me! Is it too early for tope at the moment? Also, any chance of picking up a bass?

why don't you use your fixed spool, Ive seen plenty of them being used to good effect for uptiding and at the end of the day a boat rolling around isn't really the place to start lobbing 8oz weights around with a multiplier for the first time....then again everyone has to start somewhere...go for it i'll bring me hard hat.
good advice though to get out on a field, you should get the hang of it within half hour. 30-40yards is all you need to attain the tricky bit is letting enough line out to hold bottom which we'll assist you with.

should be a good day, looking forward to it, did mike say the boat is out of the water still and are we sure it'l be back in by sunday?

might have to try some of those tiger prawns........in a sandwich with a bit of mayonaise

Good to hear you`re coming out to play John ,thought you`d retired from fishing !!!!

Boats back in and the forecast is lookin pretty good so far, suntn lotion will be needed !!!......

You`ll be fine Pross ,we`ll get you sorted with the multiplier in no time.....keep the old fixed spool for what they are meant for "whisking eggs"....
