North Slip @ Penarth

It's been a couple of years since I last launched from Penarth (South Slip), I've just bought a new boat and I've got the key for the north slip and i'm itching to go fishing. However, is their anyone who can give me some advice about the slip (i.e. states of tides, best place to park, adverse weather conditions to launch/retrieve in?). I've looked on www.boatlaunch.co.uk but it doesn't give the information and as i live in the midlands makes it a little difficult. Any information about this slip or other launch sites on either side of the channel would be greatly appreciated.

Tight Lines.

Re: North Slip @ Penarth

You can launch from channel view. This is inside the barrage, you need a permit available on site, and has a secure compound to keep your trailer and vehicle in while your out. This also means you need to lock out thro the Cardiff Bay Barrage, with the advantage of no tidal restrictions (24 hr Access in and out).Just give cardiff council a ring for details ,and then when your ready to lock out, call the barrage on VHF channel 18, locks out are on the hour and half hour, back in on quarter to ,and quarter past.....

Hope this helps,good hunting..........

Re: North Slip @ Penarth

Do you get the permit from the leisure centre? As i understand that this slip has time restrictions on launching & retrieval? However, I'm a little confused as the local council has charged me £25 for a key for the north slip on the seafront.

Cheers

I have a mate who launches from the slip at Penarth and he also pays the £25 for the key. I will get some info from him later in the week and post his advice. some other info might be handy size of boat what car you have etc.

I've got an original Raider 16 (Wheelhouse version - Fantastic!), rollercoaster trailer and a Discovery to tow it with. Any info about the slip or others in the area would be greatly appreciated

Re: North Slip @ Penarth

Theres also a slip in sully bay though theres a height restriction barrier there, parking at top of slip, appx 3 hrs either side dependant on neap or spring if memory serves me well.
Also a slip at barry (watch tower bay slip ) this needs a key 4 access and like most slips in the area is tidal appx 2 hrs either side of hw but a much more sheltered slip than the rest.
Theres also the old ferry slip under the old severn bridge but this is a very dangerous area unless u know it with reef and sand banks that completely dry out and tides that do'nt allow 4 mistakes, only useful on the neaps and i only mention it in case you've seen it on boatlaunch and are tempted,my advice give it a miss.
I think theres also a slip into barry harbour but have never used it and ca,nt comment, but a little bit of digging may come up with an answer.

I`ve never used the slip at Sully because the height restriction is only 6ft 2 inches and even my small boat wont go under the barrier. I reckon its more for jet ski`s than "proper boats". I dont know how true this is but i`ve also heard of trailers being vandalised whilst left there......I`d like to hear from anyone who`s actyally used this one.

Re: North Slip @ Penarth

Hello keana
I actually used 2 use this slip before the height restriction was put in place and though i never had my trailer vandalised my mates was and he had the stereo nicked from there, after that we never bothered and some time later the barrier was put in place, but that was 1 instance in about 25 lauches at the site.
Apparently the problem stemmed from a remand home nearby which i was told some years ago had now closed, this i cannot confirm or deny and have not bothred 2 find out as the barrier is too low 4 me 2 use the slip anyway, but as a matter of interest if anyone reading this knows whether thats right or not drop a reply in.
