| Well ive done it again, got myself a second hand motor with probs!! The guy ive got it off, says that he has had it running since it went under water after his boat sank. I havent tried it yet, but he says it runs but not well. Looking at another forum, it was suggested to the unlucky bloke with the same prob, to run B-12? through with the fuel, for a good couple of hours, and the likely hood is that it will sort out the dogged running? Tommorow im trying it out, so i`ll put on here exactly how it runs(if indeed it does!). Any thoughts? |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! I've only ever heard that a drown engine is toast, like the million or so "used" cars that will be/are streaming out of the flood states, Buyer beware. Or that it has to be totally torn down, inspected, cleaned, polished, etc. etc. and put back together w/ assembly grease, the whole 9 yards like a new one. I'm interested to hear what happens...good luck, hope I heard B.S. __________________ A bad day fishing is better than a good day working! | Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! It GOES!! Under the hood looks good as new(its had a good wash!), tried to pull start but it wasnt having it. Checked for spark, ok. Took of carb, opened looked ok, fuel was getting into the head fine. Compression fine, so head scratched a bit.Tried again to pull it over with full throttle and hey presto! kept cutting out, but settled down to turn over ok, but i could only run for a couple of mins.(neighbours giving me the look). I will run newer fuel through with some redex as i dont know how old the fuel is. Anything i should be aware of?? p.s what is the fuel mix on this engine anyone know?? cheers |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Take off the carb and give it a thorough clean, blow through with compressed air and then put a load of WD40 through it. Blow through again with compressed air and reassemble. Undo all the electrical connections and clean them, give them a squirt of WD40 and a smear of vasseline before you remake them. Dont forget the ignition system, kill swich and all the eart points. Salt on these will mean trouble down the line, get it out now. Change the gearbox oil. Put a capfull of 2 stroke in the sparkplug hole and pull it over without the plug in place. Put a new plug in. Dump the fuel mix and make up fresh at 25 to 1. (Normal mix is 50:1) Start the engine up and give the outside a good squirt with corrosion guard, all over the powerhead. Listen for any unusual sounds or missfire. Run for 15 min just over idle in a tank of water, check for a good flow of water from the pee pipe. If it runs OK open it up a bit more and run a tank of the rich fuel oil mix through it. The bearings inside the powerhead can be damaged by the salt but there is no way to check without a complete strip down, depends how long it was left in the air after it's dunking, you may be lucky they are a fairly hardy motor. | Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Cheers Chris, will do all that this weekend. Can I spray wd40 all over the electrics (stator etc), or not? Thinking is to give it a good coating to remove any salt etc, and do i have to have it running to do this? Ta. |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Won't do it any harm with it runing. Once it has warmed up squirt corrosion guard over it to protect the metal. |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Thanks again Chris. Now , ater i had it running in the tank, I have oil coming out of the engine through a small hole (manufactured as) above the gearbox at the joining point of the bottom of the engine,(sorry, does that make sense?) i thought it was the gasket it was coming from but it was coming down from this hole. Ill send a picture if you cant understand me!!! ideas? Cheers. |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Bit confused but if you are running it as suggested at 25 to 1 there will be quite a bit of unburned oil at it is twice as strong as recomended. This is to displace any water that may remain internally and to give the workings a good dose of lube. It could be that the oil is the unburned stuff being blown out of the leg. Once you have run a tank of the rich mix through swap to a normal 50 to 1 mix and it should stop. If it doesn't shout and we will have another think. |

| Re: 1997 Johnson 5hp Dunked!! Sorry. After reading replies properly without missus in me earhole, I realise that you think i have already run with the rich mix, but i havent yet. This oil is still coming out from when i originally ran in the water butt. It is placed towards the back of the leg, under the cavitation plate, where the sections join. I can take a picture and send it to you if it helps. Let me know. cheers, stuart |
