Re: Help!! seavoice vhf...What jack?

You`ll need a marine vhf aerial, you can get them from any good chandelrey shop, take the set with you to make sure you get one with the corect end fitting, these usually come seperate and need to be soldered on to the coax cable.

Cheers mike, will get that sorted tommorow.

Now. Am I right in thinking that channel 16 is the emergency frequency? I also presume that all I do is try going through the channels until I come across others talking? Sorry, all new to me, I feel dumb asking!!

Re: Help!! seavoice vhf...What jack?

Yes ,channel 16 is the main traffic channel, there are many working channels, some used by the coastguard.Best thing to do really is find yor nearest RYA training centre and do the 1 day vhf course. Its not expensive and gives you all the info you need about using the radio correctly, how to send a mayday etc...The RYA website lists all the training centres,go to the main page, and click on training and follow the menus to find one local to you.Dont forget you also need to get a radio licence for your boat to.

Re: Help!! seavoice vhf...What jack?

You need a marine VHF aerial, any other type and you risk blowing the transmitter transistors in the set due to feedback. The connection to your vhf is via a PL259 plug which is normally supplied with the aerial but can be bought separately if required. They are not an easy plug to fit and you would be as well to check the inner and shield connections are open circuit with a meter before you connect it to the vhf. If for instance you have a strand of the shield braid in contact with the centre pin you will have a closed circuit and this will damage the vhf.

You also need a vhf radio licence to transmit on VHF.
