Post Clovelly - Bass Trip

Hi Guys,

Just a note to let you know of the arrangements for next Tuesday.

Clovelly is here

For those of you who have not fished for Bass etc down here before you are in for some fun!!

The main species for the day would be Bass, however, we will be fishing in some very shallow water and if the wind is too high we will not be able to fish it as it becomes too dangerous and general species fishing will be the order of the day. General species are.....Rays, Pollock, Conger, Black Bream, Trigger fish and so on, we may even catch some Bass.

Gear for the day:

Usual 12-20lb class rods or uptider rod. Spinning rod should be medium to heavy 8.6 - 11 foot is ok.
Lures. Dexter wedges, J11's J13's and Slithers. Or whatever you fancy, even Storm Sandeels work on the day sometimes.

Baits
Just in case we cannot go Bassing, I suggest you take a selection of frozen baits with you Squid and Sandeel etc.

Methods include plugging and spinning for Bass and only deadbaits are used. People who have not used plugs or spinners would find it very difficult as accuracy is all important. Only 4 people may plug or spin at any one time...but we would take it turns on a rota system so all would have a fair go at plugging etc.

The hill down to the quay is steep to say the least, there is a fisherman's Car Park circa halfway down.
So I suggest that you drive down to the bottom and drop your gear and passengers then park your car.

It is important that you telephone me on the night before after 7.30pm as the skipper will have confirmed the trip for definite by then, I will PM you with my mobile number to call me on. I will also confirm the time to meet.

Those travelling from Bristol will probably need to allow 2.5 - 3hrs drive and set down time.

If you have any questions then call me on my mobile as my home computer is down at the mo….virused!!

Lets pray for light winds so we can get in amongst them

Post Re: Clovelly - Bass Trip

Hi Guys,

Just an update for tomorrow. I have some directions to find the Quayside, without getting lost.

You need to be on the Boat for 8.30am sharp, so try not to be late. Remember it takes 2.5hours from Bristol to get there.

From Bideford on the A39 go to Clovelly Cross, turn right to Clovelly. Follow signs for the village. When you see a sign that says " All vehicles turn right" Do not turn right, carry straight on until you see a 20mph sign then take the very next left to harbour. On the right you will see a sign that says "Anglers Parking Only" ….park here nose in.

It's a 2 minute walk to the Harbour. The Boats name is "Jessica Hetty"
Skipper Clive Pearson.

Lures for the day are suggested as:

40gram Tobies, Jointed Rapalas, 40gram Dexter Wedges etc. We are only able to fish for the Bass for a short time i.e. 1.5hrs as the tide will not allow the boat to stay for very long.

You must be able to cast a lure 30 yards in a tight area, so have a practice tonight. After the Bass we will be Black Breaming and bottom fishing, so you will need some…..Squid….small box.

We will be feathering for fresh Mackeral to use as well.

If you have any queries give me a call on my mobile.

See you all there.

Le Smoothhound
