Post Porlock Bay

Hi Guys,

Sorry it's late but I did not get home from fishing until late last night and was too nackered to post a report.

The day dawned with glorious sunshine Sun factor 40 was going to be order of the day, and plenty of bottled water!

At 8.30am we met up (the Club) at our usual pick up point. We then made our way down to Porlock Weir for a day's trip out in Porlock Bay. We boarded the boat at 11.30am (can only get out of the tiny harbour 1.5 hours after high water) so it was a late out and a late back in again.

The sea was like glass, and we motored down to the "Ivy Stones" a local mark that is usually full of surprises and enormous quantities of Dog Fish, but today was different, we were seeking Trigger Fish. So on went the special rigs baited up and over the side. After 35 minutes ….nothing not even a sniff from a Doggy……does not bode well…..so a move a bit further out was required only 100 yards or so, but enough to make a difference.

Off came the "special rigs" and on went a zip slider pennell running ledger rig. Baited up with Two Peelers…….just oozing with juices …….what fish could resist that!

I bumped my lead back well away from the boat, about 30 yards, the tide was running so strongly that I was using 1lb of weight to nail the bait to the deck. Within 10 minutes the first fish of the day was brought aboard a nice little Starry Smoothound of about 5lbs. Picture taken and released in no time at all by my pal..he's not a digi camera kind of person really, more used to tuning high performance engines.

Then others on the boat hit into the doggies…as per usual. The rat of the sea quickly snaffled any bait that was put down. Then another Starry came to the boat, by someone else who had parted with good money for decent bait! I had one more fish a Common Smoothound, not enormous, but very welcome on what was turning out to be a hard day.

As the tide eased we moved further out into the Channel in search of larger specimens Tope and Conger. Down went the anchor into 60 fathoms of water, on went wire traces and 6/0 hooks.

We were now using 1.5lbs of weight to hold bottom…..god its hard work! My pal latched into a big fish as the tide started to ease a little. The clutch was working overtime! But sadly he lost the Tope near to the boat, it bit clean through his 150lb trace.

Others on the boat were catching Conger but not me! So on went a whole Mackerel flapper in search of a Tope, and after a while I had a run from a nice fish, which turned out to be a nice Conger.

Just after the tide started to flood, we moved back inshore for more Smoothies and Doggies. No Trigger Fish this week……but there is always another time!

I will post the piccies tonight.
