| Help with boat roads and reels. Hi everyone! As I've decided to start boat(charter) fishing, I've been looking trough the forums to gain an idea what rods and reels I'll need. I give up. My head will explode. I cannot research any more. Please help! My budget is £300(can go higher if must). What rods and reels should I buy and what line? __________________ The monkey evolved into man because it started fishing. Scientific fact! |

| Re: Help with boat roads and reels. Hi Vlad, As a Charter fisherman for over 35 years, one of the better off the shelf rods is the Daiwa TDXB 12-30. This is an excellent rod made in the U.K. My choice of reel would be either the Shimano 1000 or 2000 Charter Special. A couple of years ago I would have suggested one from the Abu 7000 range. However these are not being made in Sweden now and are supposed to be of inferior quality compared to what they were. I myself cannot comment on them. I know that Ben bought one and returned it, perhaps he will let you know the reason. I use a 7000 and 7500C3 and confess that they are excellent reels, however they were made in Sweden. Both my suggested rod and reel should be just within your budget. (Poingdestres of Southampton prices) but shop around for yourself. My suggested line would be 30lb braid from Braid Direct, you won't find it any cheaper. No doubt others will suggest a different combo but I have been using mine now for quite a while and can't fault it. Cheers Drew __________________ All that Glitters is not Gold |

Rods well there are loads out there and might want to look at an ugly stick 20/30lb . Ok they are oldish but do the job and can lift most fish ![]() __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports Last edited by Fishing Forum Admin; 06-18-2005 at 10:59 PM. |

| Re: Help with boat roads and reels. Thanks for your advise guys! I am very happy with it as I buy only Shimano and Daiwa in principle. I wander if the Daiwa TDXB 12-30 rod ( or the Shakespeare ugly stick 20/30lb ) and the Shimano 2000 Charter Special reel will cover all my boat fishing. Do I have to get an uptider rod aswell, for example, and do I need the lighter Shimano1000 reel aswell with a lighter rod etc. __________________ The monkey evolved into man because it started fishing. i.e go for downtiding gear then progress Uptiding is good for 50 foot of water or less ( I might be wrong as its been a few years since I have done it ) so if you fish 50 foot or less then a big yes as it gets away from the boat shadow plus noise of the hull slamming down . But then you will need a different reel The big thing with any sea fishing kit is can it withstand the salt and the pressure and I know all above do Im sure everyone will chip in as the best thing about a forum is that you get everyones point of view Ok beer time __________________ Richard|Sea Fishing |Carp Fishing| Spud Gun | Zander fishing | Fishing Reports | Hunting Reports |

| Re: Help with boat roads and reels. Richard, I like your idea about the ugly stick 20-30 rod, but which one out of the many do you have in mind? See them on this site and specify please: http://www.tackleworld.co.uk/acatalo...k_Rods_25.html Also there is Shakespeare Ugly Stick Sapphire and Gold: http://www.anglerscorner.co.uk/A-1-2%20Boat.htm I personally am inclined towards the Shakespeare Ugly Stick Gold 20-30lb. And again, as we see they make them in four versions for different strength lines. Don't I need at least two different strength rods to cover all the boat fishing? __________________ The monkey evolved into man because it started fishing. Scientific fact! |

| Re: Help with boat roads and reels. Thanks John! Thanks Tasmanian Jim! Great advise! I deeply appreciate your help! Can you give me an advise on a charter boat with a nice skipper who can show me the ropes of the boat fishing. Somewhere in the south-southwest coast. Thank you! __________________ The monkey evolved into man because it started fishing. Scientific fact! |

| Re: Help with boat roads and reels. Hi Vlad You can pick up a shakespear uglystick and a penn310 for about £100 I think 'Tony's Tackle' are still doing the deal for £90, then you want some 30lb brain and 'amnesia' about 25lb as a leader, add a tackle box full of end gear and weight etc. All you need to do now is get yourself on a boat and then start buying more bits and bobs. At this point you find that £300, does not last too long Brett __________________ Rough seas = Ground baiting |
