First Timer! Morning All, I'm seeking a bit of beginner advice! A friend of mine has recently bought boat to further satisfy his fishing habbit..... I have never been boat fishing, not even a charter, i usually stick to dry land.... I do however have a couple of boat rods etc that i started out with as a nipper fishing with my dad from the piers. We are aiming to get out for the maiden voayge this weekend, in and around eastney, portsmouth. What sort of rig should i be using?? Mainline breaking strain? suitable rig traces? techniques?? i will be cobbling together what i can to start with, but will aim to invest in a bit of gear suited more to boat fishing in the near future. Any advice would be greatly appreciated by a boat newby! Cheers Mark ![]()

Re: First Timer! just a few to start with if its a dinghy type be careful of the tides races (strong currents) wear a life preserver do not stand up in the boat (people forget when they hook a fish) have an anchor and line and a whistle im sure mrg2000 can give you some more __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: First Timer! Thanks Chris, Yeah the tide certainly races through there, much experience from the shore! Life preserver, goes without saying! always worth mentioning though. Its a Shetland something or other he's bought, 20ft'er so plenty of room to stand up/move about etc... Saftey first always! I was more thinking about fishing gear, traces to use etc. Are the usual beach traces suitable to use???? Thanks Mark

Re: First Timer! absolutely, basically, rod length, and no shock leader, no need to cast, only a gentle lob, good luck, have fun, i know i did when we used to fish pompey harbour __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

Re: First Timer! look foward to it, i fished at times with a 10' ledger rod, coarse reel,8lb line, for flatties, good sport on light tackle. __________________ good luck and tight lines chris lifes to short for animosity.

| Re: First Timer! use a running ledger consisting of a drilled bullet lead - bead - swivel - 5 ft of 25lb clear mainline to a size 2/0 up to 4/0 hook .bait this with rag and squid or live eels if you can get them . A set of Hokkais baited with a bit of rag or cube of mackerel will winkle out just about everything else. use the running ledger if you are drifting along and shorten the hooklength to 3ft when the tide eases .. If you are fishing at anchor lower the gear off downtide and periodically let a little line out so that your lead keeps in constant touch with the bottom .. remember when using rag on the boat to only hook it through the first inch or so and leave plenty tail wriggling when drifting in the tide .. same for half a mackerel fillet - hook it once through the tail end and let the tide give it plenty of life . | Re: First Timer! I've armed myself with some various baits to try out, anyone used scallop frills before??? I heard a rumour this time of year Limpets are killer for bass, so got some of them too. I've used Baits'R'us, which i've found local to me that do mainly internet sales, uk wide delviery next day, but have a great selection of frozen baits, but also live peeler, sand eels etc. Frozen stuff is much cheaper than my local tackle shop, Rag is almost 50% more expensive so won't use them for that, but for frozen, don't think you can beat it! As i'm local i rang up this morning and collected at lunch time!!! I'll wait and see if i catch anything before putting a sure fire recommendation up for them lol, but as for selection price and 'visual' quality, have to reccommend!!!!! |
