| Re: conger trip what a great trip. was a bit secptical about fishing with strangers to start but i knew two of the party and the others were very welcoming. then to the fishing collecting bait was hard work with the mackerel not very obliging. After stopping twice we eventually collected enough for bait so on to the ray pits.almost as soon as the anchor was down the first bite was detected. Then blonde ray after blonde came over the gunnells. Fish from 7 to 28lb with most in the teens. sometimes you know its not your day and this was one of those. All around rods were bending into fish but no matter were i stood or bait i tried my rod just bounced with the tide. Even the skipper cut me fresh bait and held my rod ( no comments) feeling for bites but with no luck. Of the ten anglers aboard i was the only one without fish. some anglers already into there 2 and 3rd fish. Then it happened the rod tip bounced to a different pattern than the tide. being eagle eyed the skipper shouted give it some line. then on instruction i began to wind in, only to bring a mackerel aboard. another hour and more fish aboard but still nothing. As you do i began to think it wasnt going to happen when the rod was almost pulled from my hand. Then began the fight of my angling career. the ray kiting in the tide was like bringing up a lead kite. The skipper kept saying its a good fish this one and offered me lost of advice as to how to play it without losing it, something several anglers had already done. After what seemed a age, about 15mins the ray surface some 50yrds away. Eventually you could see the ray had line around its tail and this was the reason it took so long to bring aboard. Not as big as first thought the blonde weighed about 25lb a personnel best for me. Although it was my only fish i had a great trip and made some new friends. In all about 30 blondes were caught. We then moved to another bank chasing small eyed ray. This proved a mistake as far as fish numbers were concerned but a spotted ray and large plaice 4Lb were caught before it was time to return. Most anglers went home with fish for the pot but lots were returned. it may not have been my conger trip but a excellent trip with a pb as well. |
