boat reel

hello i have just brought a penn 6/0 for a spot of conger fishing. i intend to put 300yds of 80lb braid on as main line. i have to put backing on first what size and approx how much should i use. i have been told to use approx 40lb mono is this about right or should it be stronger.its only backing. some people reckon 80lb braid a bit strong but others including my skipper reccomend it.

The greater breaking strain ,and consequently diameter of the mono , the less you will need to use .The only down side of 80lb braid will be if you get snagged in the wreck or the bottom ,it will take some breaking !

Re: boat reel

Re: boat reel

80lb Braid does seem a bit of overkill, as it will turn boulders over on the bottom before breaking, I think 50lb would be ample
