Boat fishing around the River Severn bridges

Hi all,
Im looking for some help with boat fishing in the Severn estuary. I'm going out on the boat next weekend and wondered if anyone can tell me some good places to anchor and some bait/rig advice would be very helpful.

Thanks

Re: Boat fishing around the River Severn bridges

Hi and thanks for the welcome. Its my girlfriends fathers boat, he has plenty of boating experience. The boat is about 15ft, like a warrior. We'll be fishing between and around the two Severn bridges for now. Went out yesterday but both blanked. I've fished from the shore around this area plenty in the past with varying success but boat fishing is completely new to me so any tips and advice will be gratefully received.

Re: Boat fishing around the River Severn bridges

I ran a charter boat in the Bristol Channel for many years and by far the best way to fish is Uptiding

Keep the end gear plain and simple ,running leger link swivel for the lead ,make sure you use 8oz gemini leads ,trace needs to be around 3 ft long 30lb with 4/0 - 6/0 pennels, that`ll handle most things your likely to catch.

Venturing down channel to the English Welsh grounds will give you a better chance of some fish ,although the cod run is slowing down considerably.

Try to avoid fishing bigger tides as the rip makes fishing ( and holding anchor) difficult ,and minimises the amount of time you can easily and safely fish.

Thanks Mike. We were using pretty much the same rig yesterday with sand eels as bait. Didn't think this was ideal so will try lug next time and hope for better luck.

Big worm baits work best for the cod tipped off with small squid strips
,whole squid works well too and can bag rays and eels as well as cod, sandeel is best left for further down channel
