Transducers

Hi all, I am adding a new gps and fish finder to Silver Lady, and so need to change the transducer. I am not sure if I should stick with a transom mounted one or fit a through hull type. I would prefer to fit the through hull type unless the transom mounted type works better.

So can any one advise me of the pro's and con's of each.

I am adding quite a bit of kit to SL and altering the trailer, I am taking pics as I do so when I am finished I will do a post all about it with the pics.

I don't know if all the new gear will help me catch more fish but I hope so, my catch rate for the last two years has been, well poor would be kind. Things have got to such a stage that my wife has given me a small wooden fish to fit to my boat key ring so I don't forget what they look like, and I always come back with at least one fish.
So thats all for now cheers Cliff

Re: Transducers

What make electronics are you using and when you say thro hull ,do you mean drilled thro with the transducer below ,or mounted inhull and working thro the hull ? Theres not too much between them ,the thing you need to consider is that the fishfinder is only as good as the transducer, the more you pay the better the result .Consider the beam width and the power of the transducer too. Dual frequency transducers can give you a better picture as the narrow beam concentrates directly down and the more powerful beam spreads out further .

Airmar are the leading transducer manufacturers , and supply most of the "big boys" like Raymarine ,plenty of good info can be found here ....... http://airmartechnology.com/

Re: Transducers

Thanks for that, I am using a Garmin 556s gps sonar unit. My boat is a Linder 400 sportsman, it's made from aluminium, and by through hull I mean shooting through the aluminium not cutting a hole in the hull.
Cheers Cliff.
