Honest opinions please, good bit of kit or waste of money?

I am a normal bloke so I like gadgets.
I have the normal stuff for boats (or small ship as my radio licence rather laughingly calls it). vhf, gps, fishfinder etc etc. Some of them even work occasionally!

Today I was shown a tiny video camera with weights and big fin attached to a 300 foot lead. It plugs into a 6inch screen with various functions the whole thing powered by a reasonable sized rechargable battery. The camera is also infra red (I put it in my pocket and could count my change!).

It is completely designed for shoving over the side of a small ship and seeing whats around, very good picture quality.

Imagine lowering it down to wrecks!!!

Ignoring price.....ouch.....fishing aid and very interesting?.....or cheating?

Look forward to your opinions. Just thought...could be left in a channel at low tide to see if fish are coming up to the beach! Don't think casting it would be an option though.

Kind regards, Jules.

Very interesting mate

But if vis is three foot then thats all you would see !!!

I would spend the extra money on a better gps fishfinder ( I imaging that the cost of the item would buy you the best fishfinder on the market ) but then again Im like you " boys and toys "

Would be cool to see how fish attack bait or not in may case

Sounds a very interesting piece of kit, and personally I don't think it's cheating.

I think I remember talking to Steve Devon about one of these, his skipper had one and it got knocked over the boat, but he said what he saw was worth the money....dunno if this was the same thing or not.

Re: Honest opinions please, good bit of kit or waste of money?

Not sure how much help it would be as a fish catching aid - but it sure would be interesting to see how the fish behave down there.

If it can be attached to your lead (or used as a lead) and angled towards the bait or lure it would be fascinating to see the fish taking the bait or hitting the lure.

Re: Honest opinions please, good bit of kit or waste of money?

Ben Hi,

The water around Teignmouth is gin clear.....sorry, as clear as tapwater. If you watch the fishing progs on sky a few of them do use these underwater video cameras. Not sure about the sporting aspect though, you could slowly motor along a wreck to see where the fish are....is this fishing?

Cheers, Jules

Hey mate, you know that the fishare onthe wreck as soon as someone catches one, so you can only cheat a wee bit. Besides, knowing where the fish are aint a guarantee that you're gonna catch em........ re our last wrecking trip, I knew the fish were there by watching Paul Lingham hoist em onboard........
