Re: Help i need a boat rod

is it uptide or down tide you wanna do?
uptide being where you cast a weight uptide, these rods are usualy longer, or downtide where you just drop the weight over the edge
if you need a reel as well there is a good deal in tony's tackle at the moment for a penn 320 gti and a ugly stik elite for £100
i aint an expert and only took up boat fishing a little while ago so other people will probably be able to help more, whats your budget?

Re: Help i need a boat rod

Hi Bobby,

You will have to decide on what type of fishing you are going to concentrate on, Uptide, Downtide or both. You can Downtide with an Uptide rod but you can not Uptide with a Downtide rod. However you would be better off buying a separate rod for each type of fishing. The good thing about all of this is that you will only require one reel.

Next comes your budget, how much do you want to spend? I would suggest that you go out with a charter boat that is sponsored by one of the manufacturers and try the various rods and reels until you find one that is suitable. Not 1 person can advise you on what to buy. They will tell you what they have and if they are happy with it. Very few people will admit that they have gone drastically wrong with their equipment. they will tell you that it suits them.

All I can advise is that you spend well and don't buy cheap rubbish, you will regret it.Most of the rods, Downtide and Uptide, by Daiwa - Abu and Shimano are all first class, and come with an excellent service backup, as do their reels.

My favourite reel is the Abu 7000 C3 which can be used for all types of sea angling including beachcasting, although it is a little heavy for that. My favourite Uptide rod is the Gemini, which is no longer available, and for light to medium Downtiding, the Daiwa TDXB 12 - 30.

Most half decent Uptide rods come in two categories 2 - 8 or 4 - 10 i.e. casting weights in ozs.

Downtide rods are rated in line strengh, e.g.12 - 20, 12 - 30, 20 - 50, 30 - 50 and so on. The 20 - 30 being the most popular for general Downtiding.

I purchase all of my gear through mail order, having gone through the magazines for the best deals. My favourite tackle dealer being Poigndestres of Southampton. I have found them to be one of the cheapest. No doubt someone else on the forum will tell you of a cheaper one.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Re: Help i need a boat rod

Welcome to the forum Bobby
If I were you I would have a look at Jim's in Penzance, they do great deals on Shakespeare rods, you should be able to get an uptide and downtide rod for £100 max!I would recommend the Navigator downtide range and an UglySapphire uptider, whatever you do choose rod wise please do not under any circumstance be persuaded to get a Shakespeare reel - unlike the Shakey rods that are excellent value - their reels are crap!

Welcome Bobby Buoy

For Uptiding you cannot beat an Abu Conolon plus Abu 7000 multiplier. Conolon rated up to 10ozs.

This is my personal preference.
