Re: cod fishing off weymouth

if you are talking offshore then any of the rough ground marks to the east ( the usual whiting grounds ) plus marks like the shambles .. Best baits in the winter are 3 or 4 whole squid and coloured muppets on 6/0 or 8/0 hooks ..
Ashore , chesil is the only place worth a look for a cod

There are lots of areas off Poole aswell - the deep holes tend to hold the fish

I doubt you'll see many , if any cod on the inshore wrecks so artificial lures wont be any cop .

Thanks Scottish, as we are new to the area down there in weymouth we dont know where the usual whiting marks are .we have fished the shambles and had some good fish, do you mean the rough grounds on the back of the shambles (south) or the rough grounds over by durdle door?,thanks for the other info mate.

I reckon your better heading East towards lulworth and durdle or off old harry ..

Abbotsbury bouy is another good area

for some big channel whiting try cubes of mackerel as it seems to attract the bigger fish ..
Had Cod boated over 30lb on a simple heavy mono 'wishbone' - 100lb bs with 8/0 o'shaughnessey hooks - 2 whole squid on each hook plus a flouro muppet ..

obviously peeler and lug baits are worth a stab and you'll pick up other species too but its wether you want to go all out for a double figure fatty or just catch whats about .

I TOTALLY BLANKED SATURDAY USING BLACK AND SQUID, FOR THE STRAY COD, SWITCHED TO FRESH CAUGHT MACKERAL AND PLAGUED BY DOG FISH AND BREAM WITH THE ODD GURNARD HERE AND THERE, WIND PICKED UP AND WE HEADED HOME EARLY...CHATTED TO A SMALL COMMERCIAL FISHERMAN WHO HAD SOME SOLE AND A COUPLE OF COD.

That does sound like the cod aint turned up there yet, as for marks if I remember about 400 yards off pulpit rock used to get the odd one or two
