3rd trip in the Lady Rita

Met up with a couple of boat owning friends yesterday for a spot of fishing in the Weymouth bay area. We met up at the Sailing Acadamy on Portland around 9am & by about 10am our little flotilla set sail. As well as the Lady Rita, & my first mate Rita there was Wayne & his boat, the Sandy Jill...
And Trevor & his partner Elaine plus crewman Mike in a Warrior 150

Trevors Warrior 150 & the harbour masters rib

At first conditions did not look ideal. To put it mildly, there was a slight chop on the water. But we decided to launch anyway & fish in the shelter of the harbour. But as we went out, the wind dropped & we ventured out into Weymouth bay.
First job was to find some Mackerel for bait. After two hours, Wayne had four mackies, I had one & Trevors boat had zero. Fortunately we had also come equipped with some fresh ragworm & squid, so it was time to try for some other species. Wayne & Trevor decided to head back to Portland harbour entrance & I thought I'd try a few drifts over a deeper bit of water off Church Ope Cove. Using rag as bait I managed a few small & one decent Wrasse at Church Ope.
Trevor & Crew wer,nt having much luck drifting over the wreck of the hood in Portland Harbour & Wayne was kept busy responding to a request for assistance from another broken down boat, which he eventually towed back into port.
As the bites had dried up at Church Ope & the tackle loss over the snags was getting expensive. I headed back into the harbour to join the others & we moved over another wreck site within the harbour. We had a few small wrasse, but nothing to write home about. Wayne decided to call it a day & Trevor & I moved to the harbour entrance to try a few drifts in the faster water. I had fished here before on Colin Pennys charter boat Flamer & recalled catching a few fish close to the harbour wall. So that's where I headed. Result.... A few better size Wrasse, a stunning cuckoo wrasse & some black bream. One of which was the tinyest i'd ever caught.....

A 2" Black Bream

A slightly Better Bream
Another better Ballan

A nice Cuckoo Wrasse
We called it a day around 6pm & headed home for a large Doner Kebab & a drop of cider....

No good marks in Cardiff Bay ,unless you want to go Pike fishing !.....can point you in the right direction to a few outside tho ...its a rumour that there used to be good cod fishing in the Bristol Channel once ,long ago ,back in the mists of time ...
